What would you think of this?

Someone who wants one of Pops pups has called me to speak to me, I have known them for a long time.

She is a dog mad lady and lovely as anything.

She has ALWAYS had a dog, when I was small she had 2 little terriers (one after another) and an english bull terrier, all one after aother and she had them from pups till death.

She got divorced around a year ago and got her own flat, her EBT had died shortly before and she went to a rescue centre and got another EBT, an adult.

She wanted one of my pups but I wasn't sure as this EBT was very big and quite energetic and boistrous.

The lady couldn't mind my girls whilst i went away for 4 days as her EBT was too excited around them.

She has called me very upset saying that she is thinking of rehoming her EBT

she has 2 grandchildren under 3 and the dog has started to claim her grandaughters toys and become really possesive in the house.

This teamed with the fact that the owner has lost alot of weight through stress and cannot physically restrain her anymore, she is a very powerful dog.

I can understand why she feels this way and I know she has always had dogs and always been the most responsible dog owner I have know, her life has litereally ALWAYS revolved around her dogs.

Yet I feel slightly uneasy about this dog going then my pup taking its place.

What do you think?

considering she has always been a fantastic dog owner to her previous dogs and got this dog shortly after a traumatic time would you feel you were able to accept that the dog she has now is not the dog for her but the pup she would take from me would be right for her?

I do feel it may be the case, pugs are alot smaller and laid back and shes been a friend for years.

Its just hard.

**edit - i have complete confidence in this person as a dog owner and as an owner of one of my pups and i accept that people can sometimes choose the 'wrong' dog - i did it myself once, but its the dog out then dog right in part that im not sure about, iykwim?

Re: What would you think of this?

well we all make mistakes, she may have thought that that was her perfect dog and its turned out too strong so the best thing to do is re-home it to a owner who knows what they are doing.

just trying to think if it was me and someone called who had a kitten that was like that, if you know her and she is a good owner but has made a mistake and you think she can take care of the pup then whhy not?

Re: What would you think of this?

It is a tricky one but I think I'd be less likely to consider letting her have a puppy from me if she was intent on keeping this boisterous and possesive dog that she can't control

Nobody likes to think of a dog being moved around but it does show some responsibility on this womans part. She has recognised there is a problem and therefore doing what is essentially best for the dog concerned before this behaviour totally spirals out of all control and something worse than rehoming seems the only option left

Re: What would you think of this?

If you feel this person could offer your dog a lovely home.. regardless of the EBT (we all take on things we cannot see out at some point in our lives) then I would let her have one..

If you feel she cant then I wouldn't.. Only you know what she is like..

My nan always had Dobes... when her last one passed on we got her an adult terrier (she had terriers on the farms loose and they didn't roam)... She couldn't cope with the terrier we got her and i had to have it back.... It kept escaping(she lived in the country and her garden obviously wasn't terrier proof anymore)..But I reckon she would have coped with a terrier from a pup or another dobe..

If any of that makes sense to you.. I know hat Im saying though.. xxx

Re: What would you think of this?

Thankyou,

thats what I've been thinking really.

I know she is an excellent dog owner but I think she rushed into getting the EBT because she was lonely in her flat and she assumed this EBT would be the same as her other one who was very docile and calm.

I know a pug would be no trouble for her and and as long as she rehomes her dog responibly then I think I'm happy for her to have a pup, more so than if she was struggling with this bigger dog and still wanting a pup.

Thanks for the advice x

Re: What would you think of this?

The fact that she has always had a dog 1 after the other untill death i think tells you a lot about her, she obviously loves her pets, & yes we all make mistakes but as was said earlier she shown responsibility by accepting the fact that she cant manage this 1 and needs to rehome, She obviously will get new pup straight away as shes always done that on the death of her others, im sure this lady will be a loving caring owner for your pup untill the end,

Re: What would you think of this?

i agree with whats been said and that the lady in question seems to have the other dogs intrests at heart the only thing i would question is... when she first asked about one of your pups did she seem as though she was wanting another dog with her current dog? did you tell her that you were worried about her currnet dog been to much for a puppy? only ask as if she had the intentions of having a pup off you as well but you pointed out her current dog would be to much and after that she has decided she no longer can keep the ebt then id be worried that shes making excuses to rehome the ebt just so you will allow her a puppy, so then i would say no to her having a pup, if however she was already finding the ebt a problem before talkign to you about a pup then yea i probably would allow her a pup.
