Would you share this experience with me and guide me
Hello, this is my first post so i will give you a heads up on the recent times in the hope you will experience this with me x
I have had my bichon for nearly four years now and she is pregnant. It isnt a planned pregnancy however im going ahead with it. She is my shadow, I love her very much. She never had heat cycles regular, a couple of times when she was younger i mentioned this to my vet who was not concerned because she was my only dog and i had no intention of breeding her , however we've had an accident. My sister took in a bichon frise boy ( the elderly lady was going into a care home and could not take him with her ) She has had him for about a year ( hes in good health ) and if i needed to go out for the day id leave my bichon with her for company. He has no kc papers however mine does. Anyway to cut a long story short i last left my bichon there mid september and they were in her garden playing most of the time ( or so she thought! ) . Since then my sis started college and asked me to take her bichon boy. I did so since our dogs loved each others company. There has been no monkey business since he arrived here as ive been home everyday. Anyway, in the last couple of weeks my bichon started acting strange. She went off her food and started sleeping a lot. She started eating insoles from shoes ( which she has never done ) i figured it must be bad behaviour due to now having the other bichon here permanently. I noticed her tummy is swollen and feared she'd a blockage due to eating the insoles. I took her to my vet and shes pregnant!! He can tell by the shape and by her breasts. He says her seasons could have been "ghost seasons" and has booked her for a scan to confirm the puppies but he has no doubt. I left quite shocked and with lots of questions i should have asked unsaid. My family have rallied round and depending on how many she has most will have perfect homes but im scared. I have never done this before. My vet has every faith in me and will be on hand if hes needed ( which does settle me a bit ) and he doesnt seem to concerned as my bichon has always had perfect health but i want to ask more and dont want to seem foolish. My bichon hasnt had any of these tests i have recently read about ( which they should have before pregnancy ), how will our boy bichon react to puppies etc and im reading as much as possible to help over the next couple of weeks to prepare, just hoped you could all guide me with your expertise and maybe give me advice....i have to begin taking her temperature and things and im so nervous, could you please go through this with me, I know its a lot to ask but im not sleeping through worry that i will do things wrong x Please dont scold me for the unplanned pregnancy or advise me to abort her babies i feel awful as it is, im in turmoil and hope some support will give these babies the best start in life x |

Re: Would you share this experience with me and guide me
I'm no expert having only had one litter, but there are some things that you will need to get in preparation of the litter being born.
If you want to read my thread here is the link... Coco's (fluffles) pregnancy countdown Hopefully Tanya will be along soon to help and advise, in the meanwhile, here is a link to a website she has created for dog breeding. Thinking Of Breeding Your Dog? Will be watching your thread closely for updates... assuming there's no nonsense from the high and mighty ![]() Good luck xxx

Pug D :
Hiya, Yes he said in his experience he'd say without a doubt ( after examining her ) they dont have a scanner on the premises so are arranging one at another surgery. She is having blood test to confirm for definate - couldnt do it at the time because she'd had breakfast? I have to make sure she has empty tummy on the day. I can only work out to mid September - not sure the date i left her exactly so i think she'd be about 7 weeks ?? shazalhasa: thank you, got lots to read up on and lots to arrange and buy. Even more scared now but hopefully if i study enough and listen to advice we'll have healthy mum and pups x I have made an appointment with my vet to discuss everything that worries me and any questions I have next week so maybe i will feel a little more confident after discussing it fully x |

Re: Would you share this experience with me and guide me
Hi, first of all you will need to get your supplies in have a look at this site Whelping box | Whelping boxes | Heat pads from Petnap Ltd | kittening you will need to buy a whelping box and get her settled in it asap. I would put her on a puppy food to give her the extra nutrients she needs. Hopefully the vet will be able to give you more of a accurate due date but if she is 7 weeks you only have 2 weeks to get ready which is not long. you will also need a heat mat, a whelping kit, whelpi(milk substitute) thermometer, nasal aspirator, stethoscope, lubricating gel, loads of newspaper, old towels, dental floss to tie the umbelical cord, dopram v drops for pups who have trouble breathing at birth. Get the book of the bitch an read it quick.
there are probably loads of other things but this is what i could think of, of the top of my head. How old is she? has she had a litter before? Good luck, try not to worry (easier said than done i know)not sure why it has a kittening link but you can find your way from that page hopefully lol Last edited by vizzy24; 02-11-2010 at 02:04 PM.. |

Re: Would you share this experience with me and guide me
One thing you need to get straight away is 'The Book of the Bitch' it is the bitch owner's bible, we have ours scanned by a lady that is actually a sheep scanner, we find them more reliable than a vets as they are doing scans all the time, I am sure if you read back through some of the threads on here you will find that at times like this the forum members really do help out.
There are numerous threads where members have stayed up through the night and sat and helped through the internet to whelp bitches, think on one thread they had a web cam, I know Tanya is fab when it comes to times like this, even going and helping out with one litter ![]() Wish you the best of luck, just make sure you have everything that you MIGHT need and hope that you dont need it, if that makes any sense ![]() whelping kit. The Journey Of A First Time Litter read those two threads hopefully they will help you a little ![]()
