Re: Feeding 4 week old pups

Jackson, i think the amount of fat dogs around here would make you wanna kill the owners, i congratulated one lady this morning for not haveing a fat lab, i'm not even exaggerating when i say it's the first one i've seen around this area in years.

oh btw 4/5 meals a day sounds about right if mum aint feeding them.
it really depends on the pups tho some meals they may not eat much at all. other meals they might pig out and have little fat bellys for an hour or two

Th epusp should be fine without Mum's milk now if she's not wanting to feed them. Are the pups' claws trimmed short? They need doing a coupl eof times a week at this age really, just a thought. Also, have you tried 'encouraging' her to feed them? (I am sure you have!) They are like pirahnas at that age, I don't blame herQ!

Good luck with the pups.
Yeh we trip their claws every few days as they grow like mad! Haha yeh we get in their with the pups and they feed happily, although today havnt been as keen for some reason.. im a bit hesitant about feeding raw beef are you sure it would be ok for them?

Also abbie only had a big op 2 months ago to remove tumor and splene and i think its all taken its tole on her shes not too quirky at the mo poor gal. She will go in but just for about 2 minutes a few times a day and that just gets them in a frenzy hahaha

I completely agree, i cant show abs anymore because they say shes too 'lean'... and she needs more meat on her.. the vets say she is in perfect health and i wouldnt have it any other way. Ive seen vids on youtube of fat labs trying to give birth and its awful.. it takes them so long to get the poor buggars out.. abbie just shot them out haha

It wasn't me who suggested feeding raw beef, but if you want to, ther ei sno reason not to. It's safer if you freeze it first though.

Fadey, I see fat dogs everywhere I go! People think mine are too thin, as they're so used to seeing fat Goldens. It makes me furious, but I doubt it'll ever change, sadly.

Are fox red an accepted colour in labs?

Gundoggal, just seen your pup pics and they look just right weight wise to me. Lovely, chunky pups!

Re: Feeding 4 week old pups

I'd much rather have a my pups slightly fat than slightly thin. If a pup gets an infection which leads to sickness and diorrhea, they can dehydrate and lose weight to a very dangerous degree in a matter of hours. If they've got a bit extra, they have a little safety net. Obviously they shouldn't be obese, but you need to be sensible about these things.
Our pups are now 6 weeks and on 4 meals a day. Mum still feeds them once a day, but she has very little milk now and it's more of a gesture on her behalf.
