Lightbulb Aug-1923 newsreel, 6 breeds [Crystal Palace dog-show promo]

they do misidentify a few - well... 3 of 6, but we'll give them
LOOK LIKE huskies for partial credit
KENNEL CLUB SHOW - British Pathe

the ones in bold are the errors -
Quote:
bold added -

M/S of six white fluffy dogs which look a bit like huskies,
a woman holds them and a policeman helps her keep them under control.
M/S of a bloodhound, M/S of a big St Bernard.
M/S of a Dalmatian, C/U of another dog's face. M/S of an Afghan hound, M/S of a boxer dog.
M/S = Medium-Shot, in the middle distance; C/U = Close-Up.

to see SUPER CLOSE-UPS: look under 'embed KENNEL CLUB...' - click on View as stills.
set it for every: 1 sec - then click on any 1 still-shot and it will fill 2/3 of the screen.
there are 16 stills per page, and more stills at the upper-right corner is clickable -
just turn the pages of the 'album'.

the "6 white fluffy dogs" = Samoyeds; they don't look very dissimilar except for being lighter in build overall,
and with more moderate coat - just slightly smaller and a bit less poufy.
the "Dalmatian" is a harlequin Great Dane! - a M teen-pup with natural ears;
the close-up is a mature merle-Dane's face; he is cropped and has a butterfly-nose. notice the shorter crop,
thicker ear, + shorter foreface [vs the long rectangular box of current-Danes, ahead of the eyes];

the "Boxer" is an English Bulldog - with a foreface, a real butt in proportion to fore,
and more moderate forehand: less out-at-elbows, less exaggerated shoulder + skull width,
more normal jaws/dentition.

Arrow the 1923 St-Bernard in still shots...

in still #25 notice the terrible *knees* on that young-M Saint - he is flat-footed on both rear-feet,
overpronated with vertical legs and knees stilted upward; this ADDS to the rise from his shoulders to his croup.
the hock-position on his right-rear should not even be possible in a normally jointed dog;
just looking at it in close-up made me slightly queasy.
still #31 is interesting: the boy [10 to 12-YO] looks distinctly apprehensive; the dog looks very, very tense -
facial tension, clamped-tight mouth, pupils huge, nose forward, nostrils flared, head lowered, ears are pinched:
somebody's coming. i wonder if he has a bite-history?
on 3rd glance, his whisker-bed is wrinkled; dollars to donuts, he is growling -
and his tail is pulled-inward toward his hindlegs.

to cross-check:
in shot #25 his tail-tip is about level with the 4th step of the stairs; the lower edge of his tail-feathers
are ~level with the second-step; his mouth is OPEN, and his gaze is calm.
in shot #31 his tail-tip is just above the 2nd-step, and the lower-fringe is just about level with the 1st-step.

The Bulldog was the same then as the correct Bulldogs are now. Its your pet bred bulldogs that create a bad name for the breed.

all have shorter legs from ground to heartgirth, they all have seriously-smashed faces with sub-ocular FOLDS,
all have bigger heads, arms that appear to be pinned on at the shoulder vs integrated with muscle insertions,
all have weeny butts and massy forehands, and all are F-A-T - unless i missed something?

ready to be corrected,
- terry

Wink another image altogether...

this one looks more like a dog, and less like a toad with teeth -

IOW - this non-Champ American-Bulldog looks much as old-fashioned athletic Bulldogs once did -
back when they could breathe, run vs waddle, didn't snore like chain-saws, and so on.
way-back, when they didn't get wrinkle-dermatitis on their faces and in the folds of their necks...

Re: Aug-1923 newsreel, 6 breeds [Crystal Palace dog-show promo]

Conformation of the head is virtually identical, apart from the ear set on the "old" one is slightly higher, creating the illusion that the head is narrower. They still have the nose wrinkle and are still short nosed. The older one is slightly longer in the leg, but that is what bullie breeders (show) are aiming for now as the breed standard has changed slightly. If you were to look at a white modern day bullie and compare it to the bullie on the video clip it would be easier to see. The white chest that the pics from the "modern day" create the illusion that the chests are more broad, but if put side by side to a white bullie they are probably the same. I have a picture on my laptop of a friends bullie that was bred by one of the top bullie kennels in the WORLD (Ocobo/ Mystyle) and I will ask her if I can put it up.

I do agree that bullies (and 90% of all other breeds as well) are fatter today than they were at the time, but a fat dog is not down to poor breeding.

Re: Aug-1923 newsreel, 6 breeds [Crystal Palace dog-show promo]

I'm with leashedforlife on this one, it seems that all modern Bulldogs are greatly changed from the white dog in the video. There definately are modern Bulldogs with profiles like this dog (who i'll bet actually has a muzzle, shame there isn't a shot of him from another angle) but they're not "Show Quality".
It would be interesting to see a show-bred Bulldog of today carrying a healthy weight!
