it's true, it is only because they now COMB the hair while wet very carefully, and they don't rip thru it with an old saw-blade before bathing the dog, then use a slicker to savagely yank out every mat and tangle... errrmmm - oops? sorry -

i meant to say, now they use those carefully polished S/S combs to gently detangle the dog before and after bathing, and only comb while the coat is wet, thus preventing breaking the damp and fragile hair.

that sounds better, don't it?

Western show coats...

i'd love to see the bEFORE + aFTER photos of a show-coat Western-Afghan,
romping across the mountain slopes of Afghanistan or thru brush after a wild hare -
i don't think it would be a pretty comparison, tho.

Howdy, that's my blog (Hi terry, recognize you from retrievermans blog). Aboriginal Afghans have a finite coat growth, the coat only gets so long (it varies) and stops growing. It's fairly easy to just pull debris out of the coat. With a Western Afghan the coat gets too long and stuff just gets wound up in it like hair in a gear. The dog also overheats more easily and the coat on the lower legs creates drag.

Afghans in Afghanistan, pictures taken in the 90's (warning: music):

Lots of cognitive dissonance on that link in the discussion.

Re: PIX: Afghan Hounds in their countries of origin...

Looking at how much Afghans and other coated breeds have been "improved" over the years, often wonder what the original mporters/breeders would make of our current champions.

somehow that doesn't surprise me, LOL - thanks for the confirmation of my hunch.
Cool! thanks so much - i love to see dogs of original-type.
i think seeing the dogs living in their environs, doing what they were meant to do, is really informative -
it puts the gem in the setting.

i will definitely check these out,
- terry

WoW! that was SO Cool! i loved the discussion of relative lengths, and the side and shoulder-on
trotting and standing videos of that gorgeous 9-YO veteran were fascinating -
to watch his whole forehand spring from the ground before his rear engaged was amazing.
