To Neuter or Not?

Currently in a row with OH about getting Rupert fixed.

I'm all for it, as he's started trying to hump other dogs now, although to be honest he's done this since we got him, dirty boy! It's not as bad or as often anymore to be fair, but he still tries it on the odd occasion.

Vet said he could do him now (he's only 5 months though), but I don't want to do it until he is a year old as I've heard bad things about doing it before hand.

Just after the pros/cons of doing it and when I should have it done?

Re: To Neuter or Not?

I cant see any benefits for keeping a dog intact, tbh ime sure there will be ive only kept 1 of mine intact the worst thing i ever did and had to be neutered in the end, our first springer was done at 9 months and i think that was too early knowing what i know now.

I couldn't agree more, from my own personal experience I have not neutered and regretted it. I had my boy neutered at 6 months he is a well rounded dog. He humped before and he does not now. I have met some very nice and well mannered intact dogs, but unless they were to be shown/stud dogs I see no reason to keep them intact.

Re: To Neuter or Not?

Each to their own really. If he is showing sexual/ "dominant" (-I hate that word, but you know what I mean) behaviour towards other dogs, legs, cushions, people etc then I would snip. If you own a bitch you intend to breed from but the boy isn't up to scratch then I'd snip to make life easier.

However, if there are no "bad" behavioural traits and no entire bitches then I tend to leave them entire.

Personally pets are given the snip once fully matured, just to prevent accidents.

Nearly fell off my chair, sensible advice from a vet re neutering!!

Tanya's advice is excellent, having considered getting a dog next time round, or keeping one from a litter I breed, it's something that has crossed my mind. But having been round people now who own several entire dogs, all working, and seeing how well behaved they are, it has made me more confident that I just need to crack on with any training and see how 'he' turns out, when ever that will be. I personally wouldn't just neuter for the sake of it, there would have to be a good reason, medical or behavioural.

Re: To Neuter or Not?

Monty was done at 9 months i think thats too early it did i think make him a little nervous not enough to be a problem, we didnt have harvey done and he got an enlarged prostate at 6yrs he was so ill and in so much pain and had to have in neutered after he had recovered, so i think with this experience i would leave a dog intact.

Re: To Neuter or Not?

Neutering before maturity can cause problems with the growth plates. Behaviour you can address with training - so I`d err on the side of caution and wait.

Re: To Neuter or Not?

Neuter him if you think that's the right thing for you - but unless his behaviour is causing major headaches, I would wait until he is fully mature.

Early neutering in dogs can cause long term health problems, and actually, in contrast to bitches, there is evidence that neutering causes a higher risk of health problems than it prevents.

One of my pups was a terrible humper - and with his owner being a childminder - she had no real option but to neuter early which she did with my blessing - but all round - ideally it would have been better to wait a little while, but ultimately, in this instance, there wasn't really an option.

my boy is 22 months, lives with 5 entire bitches and still hasn't humped anything (well, he has tried with the girls once or twice and must be thick because he doesn't 'get' their rejections ) goes to show how much they can differ.

Re: To Neuter or Not?

My vet also advised to leave him as long as possible unless his behaviour starts to become a problem.
