Er excuse me are you saying when BCs/WSDs are bred you cannot predict what traits the puppies will inherit ?? If so why is it that certain lines to certain dogs consistently turn out good working dogs ? I don't mean just mean Obedience/Agility but farm work. My young dog was bred by a very experienced breeder who has forgotten more about BC/WSD that I could ever learn. My boy comes from his last litter as it was the breeding & pedigree he had been working towards & boy are all the puppies typical of their bloodlines, very high(& I mean high)work drive, stamina that means they can work a full day & looks that go with being a BC/WSD.

As for people not caring what the dogs look like(construction wise)if the dog is poorly constructed it will not be able to work as well as one that is(size also comes into this as an over/under sized dog will not be able to work to the same extent as a correctly sized one) When you talk about work do you mean Agility ? Obedience ?

Farm dogs may not be glamorous or prettily marked but the on the whole are well constructed & up to size. I've only been around working BCs/WSDs for 37 years & I have rarely seen a badly constructed dog be a good farm dog

No you've misunderstood my post I was telling brainless she doesn't get to choose. Of course we want dogs with strong drive, but appearance is unimportant, ie coat colour, ear carriage. I quite agree farm bred WSD are wonderful I work one myself in competition. I personally compete at Working trails, which is a combination of tracking, searching, agility and obedience, I also competed in obedience until she was old enough to go into working trials. I have many friends who compete in different dog sports.
