Not normally. It may be that she is engorging herself in preparation for pregnancy. So just keep an eye on her diet.

Re: should i seperate my dogs while one in season?

Thanks. We kept them seperated as much as we could and when they did get together they were sperated straight away. I have put on another forum that I had noticed a change in her and she had swolen vulva and nipples ( i have been taking pics every other day to see if there has been any change. It is 4 weeks since her season ended (she was in heat and bled for 20 days). We took her to the vets when she wasn't herself about 9 days ago but said that pregancy or phantom pregnancy are not detectable until late on. Keep you posted as she's back to her normal self now and only her back nipples have stayed enlarged. There are no photos on the internet anywhere that shows what a labrador bitches nipples etc should look like and what they will look like in different stages of phanton pregnancy/pregnacy.

From reading your post, it would seem that you can't be certain nothing happened.

Phantoms and pregnancy can be identical so no, you can't tell, but for the sake of your bitch.... Ask the vet to give her a mismate jab and three months after her season get her spayed.

Re: should i seperate my dogs while one in season?

She seems to be back to herself now. I am going to take her to the vets on friday. We were plannming to let her have a litter on her 3rd/4th season hen we had gone into more depth about it so spaying her isn't something we were going to. To have a mismate jab do you need to kw if they are pregnant or not or will the vet just give her it?

You are not kidding.

My eldest girl had a phantom a year after her first litter that left me convinced my boy had got to her

In fact, I was more convinced she was pregnant that time than when she had her next litter

====================

If she is pregnant, then you may well have to take drastic action as she is so young, as you are at a major risk of losing her if she goes full term.

=========================

If she isn't pregnant and you are intending to breed in the future, you can find everything you need to know about the required health tests before breeding at http://www.lab-health.co.uk/tests.html

the vet will just give it and tbh if you think theres the slightest chance she could be in whelp i would get it done asap, shes far far too young to have puppies, shes only a pup herself and the strain would be seriously detrimantal to her health.

Re: should i seperate my dogs while one in season?

Dogs as young as 4-5 months of age have sired litters previously. Get her to the vet now if you think or suspect anything! Get the Mismate/Misalliance because the likelihood of her surviving a litter at this age is very slim.

I would personally get her spayed. Dogs do NOT need to have litters to be healthy, happy pets, and unless she is going to be adding something very special to the Lab gene pool, her offspring are not needed in this world. There are too many labradors in rescues right now, puppies are not in high demand.
