Vets or Home?

Hi all, just wondering.

When your bitch goes into labour do you take her to the vets or do you let her give birth at home? I'm just wondering about this reading a few topics here.

I'm thinking at home because it's comfort but I then think you'd want a vet incase on of the pups needs medical attention straight away.

Absolutely at home. I feel confident whelping and think it is important for my girl to be in her home surroundings where she is comfortable during whelping. Also, I knwo ther eis no risk of cross infection at home, and although there shouldn't be at the vets, not everything always goes to plan.

The vet is unlikely to come out if there is a problem, more likely I'd have to go to him (same for most vets as facilities in surgery for emergencies) but I always have fuel in the car and someone stood by to drive while I sit in the boot with my baby!

At home,
Don't want to be the one that puts a jinx on butaware of a bitch that had to have an emergency section within a couple of hours or having her pups, make sure you have the right preperations ready with feeding should anything unscheduled happen (like people really)
regards
DT

Yeah I think at home would be best. But if it's your first time for your bitch having pups and you're not sure what to do, then at a vets would be best. But personally, I think it's best to keep the stress levels of the bitch down to a minimum and this can be helped by letting her give birth in her own surroundings.

Re: Vets or Home?

I do agree with the stress at home keeping comfort. Thanks for that, I'm still learning about the dog world. Nice advice for when I start breeding (when I'm older, and have a stable job of course lol).

Re: Vets or Home?

I think your best at home.. This is why you prepare the whelping box early so your dog is stress free..

I would only take the dog the vets if there was a prob..
