What do you mean 'you wont hear anything nice from people on here'. Everyone on this thread has been very respectful of this new member, she asked for some advice, and got some. I sure her pooch is a very much loved family member - I've had x breeds in the past and no doubt will again - BUT it doesnt make them healthier, especially in the large breeds, and even if a dog is healthy and has a fabulous temperament doesnt IMHO make it a suitable dog to breed from.

Come and check with my vet,she will take you round her rescue and let you see the dogs she has been handed in, because they couldnt find homes,had got a new puppy,pup had grown too big,couldnt cope with it now it had had pups etc etc.

Ive just read crosses are healthier because the same breed aint mixing together so you wont get their problems

Really so because you read that somewhere makes it truth??? What about the mixture causing a imbalence and a new disorder???
Did you also read that all Staffords should be L2HGA,HC,PHPV and PPSC tested before they are bred,because that bit IS true.

The only dogs which will be healthier than another is the hereditary health tested ones KC or not.
Illnesses happen,but by doing your homework and making sure you test FIRST,hereditary diseases can be avoided.

If you are still looking at breeding your girl,look into the whelping,could you cope with losing your girl in whelp and hand-rearing 9+ pups.

I wouldnt risk a 5 year old on a first litter.

Exactly. It's a case of being told what you don't want to hear. So therefore, people either must be giving wrong advice or being horrible.

Can I just ask the original poster... are you planning on giving these pups to your friends or charging?

Please please reconsider your ideas of breeding....

The number of Mastiff, Rotties and Crosses of both in rescue at the moment is unbelievable, we are really struggling to find homes for these dogs and many of them are not even a year old. Just check the rescue websites including breed rescue.

As the 'breeder' you are ultimately responsible for taking these dogs back if the new home doesn't work out, and this can be for the life of the dog, are you prepared for that? Many of these beautiful dogs are being PTS due to lack of rescue space and breeders not taking back their offspring.

If I had a £1 for everyone that came onto a forum and asked for tips on breeding as their dog has a brilliant temperament and their friends said that you should have a litter so they could have one, I could solve world Poverty!

If you are contemplating breeding, there are certain questions that you will need to ask yourself before proceeding:

* Have I the time to devote to a litter until the puppies are old enough to go to their new homes, which is usually around eight weeks? this includes sleeping in the whelping room and taking time off of work for a few weeks.
* Am I knowledgeable enough to advise new owners about caring for their puppies, including rearing, diet, training and health problems?
* Can I afford to pay for the recommended health tests for the bitch prior to mating her and, where necessary, for her litter?
* Do I know enough to help the bitch during the whelping, if necessary?
* Can I afford to pay for a caesarean should the dam have difficulty whelping the litter?
* Could I cope with a very large litter of, say, 10 or 12 puppies?
* Do I have sufficient knowledge to rear the litter correctly, including worming, vaccinations and socialisation?
* Would I be able to find good homes for the puppies?
* Am I in a position to take back or re-home any puppies if it becomes necessary?

If you have not been able to say yes to all of the above questions, then breeding may not be for you. You may therefore wish to consider having your bitch spayed to prevent unwanted or unplanned pregnancies; your breed club or the breeder of your bitch may be able to provide you with further expert advice.

If you have been able to say yes to all of the above questions, do not forget that you will also need to keep the following in mind:

* Responsible breeders believe that each new litter that they breed should be an improvement on the parents.
* Responsible breeders give careful consideration to health issues, temperament and soundness.
* Responsible breeders plan ahead of each mating so as to ensure that each puppy produced will be bred in the best possible environment.
* Responsible breeders accept responsibility for a puppy which they have bred, and make themselves available to give advice, help and information to new owners.

Before breeding from your bitch, the Kennel Club advises that you check with your veterinary surgeon, your breed club and/or your dog's breeder to find out whether there are any possible inherited conditions that may affect your breed, for which there is an available test (e.g. hip dysplasia and eye conditions). There are several health schemes currently in operation to assist in the prevention or control of some diseases (including DNA tests), and where they exist, the Kennel Club strongly recommends that both sire and dam are tested.

Have you got the web address for the Rottie/Mastiff breed club?

Possibility that there could easily be 12 plus pups here (big dogs have big litters) please look and the cons and not the pros - basically cos there arn't any - it's hard to home 12+ crosss breeds, when breed resues have many pure brreds up for rehoming - unless you are prepared to give them away! are you prepared fot the vets bills you could occur?? and more importantly would you be prepared to take back any pups that the new owners decided they did not want?
