Re: What is the limit you...

I dont breed but there is a lot of these questions going round the NI's and I personally im not sure how many litters i would have out of my bitch ( if all the tests etc had been done ) but then it would depend on what pups she produced in her first litter aswell I suppose.
If she threw good pups with one stud I dont think i'd find a different stud and maybe just use him once more. She would never ever have more than 3 litters this I know for certain xx
edited to add I would only let her have this many litters as to many litters is not good for a bitch anyway plus she would have atleast a 18 month gap between litters for health reasons etc. But then I am still new to all this so sorry if i seem a bit dumb lol xx

If we got a female , then I doubt id breed from her ... though I have heard its good to allow your bitch to have at least one litter , prevents cancer of the womb or something (ok, maybe thats an old wives tale, im sure someone will put me straight , lol )

Re: What is the limit you...

My little Lilly is being spayed at 6 months - after a long conversation with my vet and plenty of research - as this can reduce female cancers by up to 95%.

The breeder I got her from only bred 3 (or possible 4 if appropriate) litters as she bred every other season starting on their second season.

Re: What is the limit you...

I would say 3 max for mine although some have only had 2 and wont be having any more and I wait 18 months between litters(Just my choice),The Kennel club rule is 6 litters or 8yrs old whitch ever comes first but I would never have that many of any of mine (Again my choice)

Re: What is the limit you...

My bitch Tegan has had 3 litters. If she had not taken to being a mother as she did then she would never have had more than 1 litter. The first litter we bred was by my sons dog Bandit she loved having pups and was a fantastic mum. The second and third litter are by my dog Owen. The first litter she had by him have done really well in the ring and I never kept one out of that litter. Because of this and the fact that my 2 males are now both 6 years old led to me mating Tegan again. She will now most likely be speyed. We kept a bitch out of her first litter and at the same time as Tegan had her 2nd litter Rosie had her first both litters by the same dog. This was not intended but Rosie was going 12 months between seasons and I had people book pups of her. We had already mated Tegan when Rosie came in sason but the decision was made to mate both. I had pups booked of both bitches.

Tegan is that puppy mad that although she had 8 pups of her own she also helped Rosie to look after her 10 pups as she struggled. I rehomed Rosie not long ago as she was not a show dog and she didn't take to being a brrod bitch she has a lovely home with another whippet and several ponies

Re: What is the limit you...

My bitch is now spayed, not by choice.
We had planned on having Two litters and then getting her spayed, sadly this wasn't to be.

I think there should be a genuine reason for breeding to retain a puppy and or to further lines not just because.I would avoid Breeders that didn't plan on keeping a pup back, fair enough if the bitch has all dogs and the Breeder wanted a bitch and vice/versa.

I think 3 litters is ample for any bitch of any breed, they are animals and derserve a life too, they are not breeding machines!
6 litters is far too many and I think 12 months is far too young to breed any bitch.

Re: What is the limit you...

I only ever breed a litter for 2 reasons

1 I want a pup to keep for myself to show or to further my lines

2 I have sufficient people on a waiting list to warrent breeding the bitch I would almost certainly keep 1 for myself.

I did keep a dog pup from Tegan and Owen's first litter but he did not take to showing he has been rehomed with a friend. Out of 9 pups she had in this present litter I shall be keeping 3 pups 1 dog and 2 bitches. I will also keep any pup I do not find a home for. Out of Rosie's litter I kept Angel and Nathan as he didn't find a home and out of Tegan's first liter I kept Rosie and Blaze .Blaze as rehomed as he had dominance problems with his dad who wouldn't except another male. And Rosie has recently found a new home
