How long do you hold a pup for?

I recently found Nathan one of my whippets a good home with other lurchers. I never intended keeping him he just didn't get sold so he stayed here until the right home came along.
His new owner had had to break up a fight between a greyhound and a JRT the terrier had attacked her mothers greyhound. She had been bitten and broke both hands. She came to see Nathan on the train but didn't feel as though it was fair on him to be taken on a train by a stranger. She gave me a deposit of £50. That was 6 weeks ago.She sent me 1 email saying her hands have had to be re broken and it would be another couple of weeks .That was 3 weeks ago nothing since.

I emailed her last week asking when she would be coming to pick him up but she has not replied. I have emailed again yesterday asking her to contact me ASAP no reply yet. I have no contact phone number for her so can't phone her.

What would you do?

I have kept one of my pups for about 4 weeks but is new owners have rung me several times and I know they are on holiday at the moment and are picking him up next weekend

Re: How long do you hold a pup for?

i think i would send another email saying that the pup is needing to go to his new home as soon as poss and did she still want it, and if she dosent get back to you by the end of the week you would rehome the pup else where, 9 weeks is a long time for a pup to have to wait.

Re: How long do you hold a pup for?

Sorry I didn't make it clear Nathan is nearly 18 months old He is one of a litter I bred last year and as nobody wanted him he stayed with me. I always said if I found the right home for him her would go. As with the pups I have now any that don't sell stay here untill I find the right home for them

Re: How long do you hold a pup for?

I'd return her deposit, sounds like she has enough on her plate

It's not fair on you or your puppy to be waiting this long for a response, I'd start going through the vetting of possible new owners a.s.a.p

Re: How long do you hold a pup for?

I would send her another email and ask her to contact you so that you can clarify everything. Tell her you need to get it all sorted out because you have other buyers interested.

If she doesn't want this pup, then keep her deposit as an offset of your expenses in keeping the pup for longer than you intended to.

If she really does want this pup, I would ask her for the full payment, and say that you are willing to keep him for as long as it takes her to get her hands better, but that she needs to contribute towards his upkeep while you keep her dog for her, which is in effect what you will be doing. (Think about what she wuld have to pay if she had had the accident after she had bought him, and she had to hire a pet sitter to look after him) She also needs to be visiting him regularly so that she can begin to bond with him, ready for when he does go to live with her.

Re: How long do you hold a pup for?

The dogs that bit her was not hers she was out with her mother walking her mothers greyhounds when a JRT attacked them. She has just 1 lurcher.
If I pt my whippets into kennels I pay £6 a day plus have to provide my own food so th deposit she gave me wouldn't even cover 2 weeks in kennels

Exactly - she's not playing fair with you at all, which is why I suggested that you contact her again and get it all sorted out once and for all.

If she does still want Nathan and pays the full amount I would not charge her for his keep aslong as I felt she was the right person for him I would be happy for dog and new owner and do everything I could to assist.

Re: How long do you hold a pup for?

i would email her saying if no contact by the end of the week then im sending him to another home and keep the deposit for the messing around.
then if she does contact you point out you could have homed him a few times and you will be charging her for the extra time, if she not happy with that then just home him somewhere with another family.
