Would You?

Let a household of two adults, where both worked full time, have one of your puppies, and what breed do you have?

I am asking because someone on another, non doggy forum wants a dog of a particular breed, yet both adults work full time. There is the option to take a dog to work, but I really can't see ho wthis can work properly with a pup. I have stated that I do not allow any household where one person isn't at home pretty much full time to have one of my pups, and this person is saying I am the exception and that they spoke to 10 breeders yesterday who all agreed working full time wasn't a problem.

So, what do you do?

Re: Would You?

Absolutely not - I wouldn't allow one of my puppies to stuck on their own all day. A puppy or dog should not be left for more than 4 hours. All my puppies are going to homes where the max that they will be left on their own is 3 hrs, so even if they have to have to stop at the shop or something they should be back in time. My puppies are border terriers.

Re: Would You?

Are they able to always take the dog to work, just think this is a good thing mine goes to work with me and she loves it she was a rescue dog and it gave her so much confidence (i work in a shop) and now she goes out to greet all the people. Another business across the way from us has two puppies there and they have found the same thing that it's really helped them socialise and get used to loud noises etc. If the pup was to be on it's own for long periods of time though then I think you are totally right

Re: Would You?

I would not like my pups to go to someone who would leave it all day. I sold a puppy to someone I knew which is different I suppose as I knew she would be taking it to work with her.She is a Groomer and works 9-3. I have visited often for a Chat and dog is great and really sociable.
So would depend on the circumstances

Re: Would You?

The only time I have let a pup go to a home that they work all day was to someone who has their own printing studio and they take him to work with them.
I would never consider it if they would be left at home

Re: Would You?

I think it depends on a lot of things really - if someone is able to come in and let the pup out, can the owner get home at lunch time to see to puppy, are they prepared for the fact that it will undoubtedly take longer to toilet train. My thinking is this - you may very well sell your puppies to someone who is at home but sometimes circumstances change beyond our control - like a bereavement or something, which means someone may have to go out to work when they previously didnt have to. When we were growing up our dogs were left from 9 til 3.30 - not quite 'full time' but a good chunk of the day - they were fine, well behaved, happy, healthy dogs - so it can work out if quality time is spent on them when you are around

In an ideal world we'd all be able to spend all day with our dogs - roll on that lottery win

Re: Would You?

I would consider it only if there were other dogs in the household, so the pup wasn't left totally alone - plus they would already have to have an arrangement in place for their existing dogs where someone was available to come and let them out at least once during the day. I would also expect them to volunteer the information that they were making arrangements for extra visits while the pup was younger so that it could be given four meals a day. (I say volunteer because then it would probably be true)
