agility in Herts

Hi
I have a 5 month old Chocolate Labrador. Can you tell me at what age they can start agility?
Also does anyone know any good clubs in the Herts area?

Thank you

Re: agility in Herts

They can't start training until they are 12 months old, but you can start teaching strong waits, directional commands, sit, contacts etc on the ground and then when he's 12 months, you can start jumping.

Hi where in Herts are you? Honestly I wonder if Hertfordshire exixts sometimes - it's rubbish for finding anything. As you can see from the number of replies you got! I know of a couple though not sure if near you.

Re: agility in Herts

Hi

I live near Hemel Hempstead. She is still only 6 months so i have a while to go yet. I went to look at a basic training class recently near me, i took bailey along to see how she would react. Well it was terrible, she was the best behaved dog there and it was an intermediate class. The dogs were all snapping at each other and trying to fight. Poor Bailey did not know what to do. Yes they could walk to heal with tons of treats, but they then tried to bite all the other dogs. Me and my partner walked out, i would never take her somewhere like that. It made me feel kind of happy as i must be doing something right, Bailey is well socialised and listens to what i say. It has put me off going to other training courses now. I would still love to start agility when she is old enough, but i think i need to be training more at home to get her basics much sharper. If anyone knows any GOOD training places in Herts then please let me know.

Thanks for the replys.

Re: agility in Herts

Most clubs won't take a dog under a year old, but there are some pre-agility classes, but they are few and far between. If you look on www.agilitynet.com click on Clubs A-Z at the top, then if you click on the County, it puts them alphabetically by county and you can scroll down to all the clubs in Herts and see if any are near you. I would always recommend you go and look at a training session before you join to make sure you like their training methods etc. Some of the agility clubs have really long waiting lists!

Re: agility in Herts

I think the Dog Academy in Tewin has agility classes, there's also a place in Wymondley.
Might be a bit out of your way though.

Re: agility in Herts

Hi,

I go to the Dog Academy on Saturday morning and can recommend them for basic training. The classes are outside and usually have about 8-10 people, but they usually have 2 trainers. I don't know if they "do" agility, but the puppies have a go at the tunnels sometimes. Their website is here: About Dog Academy.

I can also recommend these two training schools: Milners Mutts (not sure if she does agility as my pup isn't old enough yet either): MilnersMutts Home page and The Dog School: The Dog School - Dog training classes (I'm hoping to go there later this year.)

Hope this helps - good luck

Debs

Re: agility in Herts

Hi
Thanks for the info. We are starting a class with the Hertfordshire Dog Training school on Saturdays. They do a bit of everything so i'm hoping Bailey will enjoy this.

Thanks again
