I had no idea there were jumping-only classes... now if only I can get Merlin better behaved around other dogs, he would love that! He can jump like a stag and loves it, no treats or persuasion needed, I just have to point and say "Over!"
Yippeee- Merlin-agility! That'd be brilliant! He sounds like an agility star in the making. Do you have any decent agility clubs near you- I'm sure they'd be willing to help- they might even have some small classes or private sessions that can double up as socialisation sessions? I know there was one place near me that did agility but it was more of a general outdoors training/socialisation with the training exercises being for agility. Lots of fun. I'll try and find the name of it.

I think I'll probably go for steeplechase classes first, as the one in the video, i could probably do now.

would this be a good show to start with? it does steeplechase. it doesn't say when or if dogs need to be measured before or on the day?

No problem
Yes go for it! It'll be great. I've only just started competing with my baby dog and it's such a great feeling, seeing how far you've come!

Strange isn't it... they haven't stated that measuring will be available on the day but they put the specs up.
Not sure on that one- I guess the only way to find out for sure is to give them a ring.

Thank you We did some agility last year, but the only place we can get to by public transport is 12 miles/1.5 hours away by bus and only in the summer, and if it's not raining, as it's outdoors. We also had the problem that it often rains there but not here and vice-versa so we missed few because of that.

He hated the see-saw and fell off, which also put him off the A-frame and catwalk. The last session he just kept eyeballing all the other dogs especially one that kept eyeballing him, and wouldn't relax enough to do much except pop over some jumps in the corner.

Then the problem with the bluddy local yobs started, and he's just far too stressed & reactive to anything & everything now to think about anything except a behaviourist

Poor chap
Are they the people who keep calling his name, harassing and stressing him out? Low lifes

The seesaw's a hard one. At first my boy was a bit worried- we just practiced it loads and loads and my trainer was really helpful in feeding/luring for the first few times because I kept getting my hands in a twist

I actually made my own seesaw to practice with at home and now he's really confident with it. The only thing you have to remember is to give them a cue so that they remember it's the seesaw and that they need to tip it. I say "steady", then it's the 2 on 2 off "target".
Anyway I'm waffling

I made a load of kit to practice with at home, as it happens. Jumps, tunnel, seesaw, weaves (with fixed base), contact trainer, chute etc...
Have you got any jumps? You could make some and practice at home? Bet Merlin would love that. Then once he's not so worried about other dogs, he'll be rearing and ready to go!

Yup, that's them! It may help now my neighbour's got his new dog (a quiet non-reactive whippet!) as I expect we'll walk the dogs together (once I can get Merlin to accept a new friend) - it means it'll happen more but there will be someone with me as a witness.

In the olden days when they had see-saws in parks, and there were no dog-exclusion zones, it was never a hassle! I taught our family dog Sally "home agility" on park equipment when I was a teenager... she would do the see-saw (yes, 'steady' was what I used), go up the ladder of huge metal slides and slide down, walk along the tops of walls, jump 3ft no problem. Agility was very new in those days so there were no clubs at all locally.

We don't have the space but I do get him jumping when we're out - park benches, low fences, trees etc! And walking along the tops of any low walls (which my mum finds embarrassing when we're with her - but then she did back when I was 18 with Sally!). No accessible see-saws and slides in modern parks though!

Measuring for KC is a big bug-bear, it`s just not organised enough, [ not the measurer`s fault, they are all volunteers ], but before it was implemented the powers-that-be should have ensured there were enough volunteers available for all areas of the UK, and that there were enough shows willing to allow measuring [ some don`t, goodness knows why ].
Some clubs do arrange sessions where the measurer`s go to the club so it`s worth asking around in your area if any are planned, non-members are usually welcome`d for measuring sessions at most clubs.
i have one a month from jan-april which arnt KC ones...

but my 21st nov one is!

people at my club said i might be able to go and get her measured before i go - can i not still run???

im not bothered if it dosent count tbh as this next e=year is pure trial.... just seeing how she goes???

surely i cant be disqualified as they wouldnt check would they??

If she is measured before she goes in the ring including on the day then she can run, but if you are in a class which will close before measuring time you would`nt be able to

You would be disqualified yes, and could potentially be banned from KC competition if reported so I would`nt risk it, the list of current measurer`s is via the link below so you could contact the nearest one`s to see what they have scheduled and to ask to be contacted if new sessions are booked within reach for you

List of official Agility Measurers - The Kennel Club

If you are still stuck let me know and I`ll ask on the agility forum for you as it has a measuring section there

Re: Can you explain an agility comp day?

Thanks guys. I've found two shows that sound suitable, one in dec and one in late march. The one in dec doesn't need ollie to be measured as long as he's clearly in the right group. Hopefully I can get the forms sent off and we'll be able to do these shows. hopefully we'll have tons more in the summer.
