The Independents are usually not a problem for measuring on the day, so if it`s a non-KC show you are going to you don`t need to worry, but if it`s KC you could have a problem - if the measuring session is being done during lunchtime [ for instance ] but your class/es are in the morning you would not be able to run [ if the classes are completed before the measuring session starts ].
Measuring for KC is a big bug-bear, it`s just not organised enough, [ not the measurer`s fault, they are all volunteers ], but before it was implemented the powers-that-be should have ensured there were enough volunteers available for all areas of the UK, and that there were enough shows willing to allow measuring [ some don`t, goodness knows why ].
Some clubs do arrange sessions where the measurer`s go to the club so it`s worth asking around in your area if any are planned, non-members are usually welcome`d for measuring sessions at most clubs.

Depends on the show TBH. Some shows will have "nursery classes"/ fun/ casual classes (only jumps and tunnels normally) for dogs that are not entered in any other class (that's at independent shows)
Sometimes they are called Helter Skelter classes- like patch said they tend to be a speedy flowing courses but great fun all the same, especially if you have a speedy dog that drives on
.
Because it varies from comp. to comp. some of these classes might have 6 weaves in it but never have contact equipment and the jump heights are always low

I would go for one of those classes; that's what I did with my collie boy for our first show- it's nice because there is no pressure- just go out there and have loads of fun, don't worry if you don't get a clear round, although I'm sure you will

Alternatively if you don't want to do a "fun" class you could enter a jumping class only but there is 99% chance they'll be weaves in the course.
Is Ollie jumping full height?

Hope that helps

I read the link that Patch posted (thanks for that ), and it says that Steeplechase is only jumps and tunnels. Would this be good?

Ollie is medium. He's getting better with contact equipment but we are still trying to get the 2o2o position. he's so keen and excitable that he just runs straight off, but he's doing better so hopefully by next summer he should have the 2o2o well. he's still doing channel weaves at the moment, but i've started putting them closer together and he's doing well and getting the idea, so hopefully not too long for that either. i'm confused with the agility shows on agilitynet. they all seem to be championships or leagues. are there any small ones in the winter? i know agility is usually during summer, but i was hoping to find one in spring.

Re: Can you explain an agility comp day?

You're in London right?
What about South Easterns in December (28th I think?)

They have helter skelter and jumping classes.

The helter skelter class only has 6 weaves and it's clear round rosettes

I'm hoping to be there with my boy (hopefully for large helter skelter, jumping and agility if I can firm up his contacts before then otherwise just the first two)

Ah right sorry.
In that case your best bet would be an independent show and generally most have "casual" classes which would be perfect.

Depends how far you can travel as there aren't often many shows that I know of in London itself.
UKA shows tend to be pretty good for baby dogs and casual classes.

For instance there is a UKA show in Cheltenham on the 5th of December 2009. Closing date 6th November
It has both Casual and Nursery Classes- both jumping and tunnels only
Measuring on the day
It's on the show diary on agilitynet if you want more details.

I think Cheltenham's not that far from London- 1.5 hrs or 2 hours maybe if my geography is any good?

Hope that helps

Hi- yeah casual is normally just jumps and tunnels, nursery tends to have a lower A frame.
however I found this on the UKA website:
Quote:
Q. Why have you introduced a Casual class?
A. The casual class is designed for the new dog, dog recovering from injury, or older dog where the handler would like to run the dog in the competition environment. This class will award placements and rosettes, but results will not be recorded by UKA, thus it is not for progression and titles.

Casual classes will run both jumping and agility and shall follow the same rules as standard agility and jumping classes, however it allows the dog to jump one jump height lower than their competition height and the A-frame will be set lower to. The courses will not include spread jumps, long jumps or tyres.

Q. Why have you introduced a Nursery class?
A. The Nursery class is designed for the beginner handler and/or beginner dog that may need some ring experience by being offered a smooth flowing course without the seesaw or weave poles. The A-frame is lower and the jumps are set at one jump height lower than the dog’s competition height. Clear round rosettes are awarded, but no progression is available.
UK Agility

However I think that for the show in Cheltenham it stated that for the Casual class- it was jumping only, so that one might be fine. Have a look at the schedule. It might be worth giving the organisers a ring to check

Independant shows will have different rules to the above though.
The first class/comp. I entered was called an "allsorts" class and consisted only of jumps and tunnels.

Yes steeplechase is normally just tunnels and jumps.

Here is an example steeplechase course:
YouTube - Diesel - Beginners Steeplechase

If you feel confident why not? Go for it

Re: Can you explain an agility comp day?

thank you lemmsy, you've been a star tonight.

I think I'll probably go for steeplechase classes first, as the one in the video, i could probably do now.

would this be a good show to start with? it does steeplechase. it doesn't say when or if dogs need to be measured before or on the day?

Re: Can you explain an agility comp day?

I've really enjoyed this thread too - thanks Lemmsy!
I had no idea there were jumping-only classes... now if only I can get Merlin better behaved around other dogs, he would love that! He can jump like a stag and loves it, no treats or persuasion needed, I just have to point and say "Over!"
