Are labradors any good at flyball

As the title says - I don't fancy gundog training the new pup and have started obedience classes - with our new pup and the older one too. Do you see many labs at flyball? I know they wouldn't be as fast as a collie but i'm not concerned about winning - well too much

All dogs are different - you might have a little superstar, or you might have one that's totally disinterested - give it a go is the only advice I can give

The pup loves playing with the ball and gets well excited - she will retrieve for 30 mins without losing interest - my question was more about how many labs do flyball? do you see many?

Re: Are labradors any good at flyball

I've seen them do well in agility especially the working lines and if she's obssessed with the ball and a good jumper why don't you take her along to some flyball classes and see how she does. She might have to be a bit older though before you can start but from the little I've seen of flyball the big dogs don't have to jump very high anyway if you have a small height dog.

I am interested to hear that - we helped out at the recent Aberdeen Agility show and I didn't see a single lab compete - the speed the dogs were completeing the course I would think my labs would only be half way round! But frankly after I had picked up my thousandths pole I'm not too sure I like agility - I think flyball looks more fun?

Re: Are labradors any good at flyball

I did flyball with my labrador but not as far as competing as he developed arthritis in his elbow. Like yours, he was very motivated by a tennis ball and it was relatively easy to teach him to jump 4 jumps before activating the box! You back-train it, so teach the box first, then a jump then box, then two jumps then box etc etc. to build it up (I'm sure there are other ways but this worked for us). He was good at it and fast (but nothing on a collie!)

Most teams still end up being collies or collie crosses. I don't know if it's like agility where they have ABC (anything but collie!) classes / teams - that would be good! If the dog enjoys it then worth trying. I think they have to be 12 months old before they compete but I don't know what age they can start training - generally they don't jump larger dogs until 12 months or so

Re: Are labradors any good at flyball

The club i agility train at has some Labs training there, how old is your pup? if you have local clubs you could contact them and ask to go watch a training session, then when your dogs old enough you could give it a try,i know my dogs are not Labs but they both love agility,

Re: Are labradors any good at flyball

The club we recently joined does flyball classes - they start in Jan - which is when see will be 12 months, so it may all fit nicely! Thanks for the advice.
