Best way to teach weave?

How do you all teach your dog the weave??
I have seen it done with the poles in a straight line and teaching the dog to go through them,
and I have seen it done with the poles in two lines, and moving them closer together.
Which would be the easiest way for the dog to learn?

Re: Best way to teach weave?

Not sure , but i think the best way is to have good rewards such as sausage or chicken,
get dog to follow back and forth through the poles by saying close as it comes to you and back as it goes away, using the food to entice, and having the food just in front of your dogs nose, i have only done it with poles in a single line, hope this is of some help. suz x

if you can make sense of it.

Re: Best way to teach weave?

make sure you hold the treat low down at the dogs nose level. if they have to hold their head up to the treat then they can't watch where they are going and don't really learn properly. we started with the poles at an angle (like a V) and then gradually pulled them upright.

Re: Best way to teach weave?

There are three main ways of teaching the weaves:

Channel weaves
YouTube - Learning weave poles#1- dog agility training

V-weaves
YouTube - Zoey v-weaves First Video!

Straight/upright weaves:
YouTube - Savvy learned to weave

There is also Susan Garrett's two by two method.

Channel and V weaving techniques tend to create a one foot/ hop bounce whilst, straight line create a two foot bounce. This is not necesarily the truth though

I'm currently working on the weaves with my dog. Using a combination of straight/upright weaves (start with three poles- luring through with a hand touch and then tossing treat) and channel weaves.
I may try and make a vid. of our training if I have time
