Re: How to start Agility
First, how old is your dog? It should be 12 months before you start jumping. You can get your dog jumping over a broom handle over a couple of upturned buckets, and to simulate the dog walk, start with a 12 inch wide plank on the ground. When the dog's happy running along that, raise it on a couple of bricks, but go slowly.
Really, I wouldn't worry about the equipment. The dog will learn them quickly and it's best to have it taught by a trainer who knows what they're doing. The most useful things you can be doing is to get your dog to be happy on your left or right, to have good recall, to have the dog focussed on you, teach 'back' (move away from you), go left, go right, a good send-away to a target helps, a good wait is incredibly useful. Put your dog in a wait, walk on ahead, start the dog by raising your arm high, then start running on as you lower your arm to waist height, keeping it at right angles to your body; the dog should catch up and run alongside you on the side where the arm is out. Practise both sides. Get your dog to learn 'in', so it will come to you between two objects, and 'out' so it will go round the far side of something. Watch agility videos rather than read books (tho' read as well by all means), look at the body movements of the handlers and see how the dog responds to them. Practise the moves with your dog without any equipment so you can control the direction it goes in. Go to agility shows to watch (see AgilityNet to find some near you). August will be there so soon!
