Re: Agility for fun- at home

Agility training clubs train on either sand or grass. Slabs are not suitable at all. I would suggest that you invest in a good headcollar & muzzle & walk him. A bored dalmation will be going stir crazy. My GSD is not sociable on walks around his home territory. However, I go agility training & I attend agility shows. I also walk him twice a day, he is always on the lead when other dogs are close by, but I can't let his temperament stop me exercising him, that would not be fair. You need to get back to basics with him & start & give him the exercise & stimulation that a dalmation needs. You are the boss, you are in charge, not him.

I agree! Keep him taking him out and about, but be sensible.

Help- Agressive dalmatian/s

I know it shouldn't involve what its going to cost but we are struggling at the moment and are really willing to try anything.

I know we can't just stick bits up and there you go but were thinking that it would tire him out and he and other dogs would be safe whilst he's in our backgarden. Plus when ever we take him out we get comments from other dog owners that he shouldn't even be out or around dogs which is really upsetting

Hello,
With regards to the aggression problem have you tried your local APDT trainer. They only use positive training methods and should give a personal treatment plan which should help cure the aggression issue with other dogs or at least get it sorted to a managable level. Also an APDT ( or other behaviourist personally would only advise those who use positive reinforcement training methods) would be able to identify exactly what the problem is and would see it from a fresh pair of eyes.
BTW- sorry if you have already done this and I'm just rabbiting on

With regards to the agility I think you are right in saying that it would be a good idea to do it away from other dogs. An agility class can be quite an exciting environment for many dogs and so if this situation is likely to get him hyped up if may make his problems worse.
There is loads of advice on making safe equipment and basics to agility to try on AgilityNet. A really strong wait is really important. Personally I wouldn't try contact equipment on my own but maybe you could arrange a one to one session with an agility trainer for a bit of fun and you can carry on the advice on how to train the equipment yourself. Best of luck and let us know how you get on

Re: Agility for fun- at home

I do agility at home, my dog has never once went to a class or done it on "actual" competing equipment. I find if you have your own set up it is better to practice with because you can do it every day.
