Training After Spay?

Obviously I'll ask my vet this question as well and insure that my dog is completely comfortable before even considering taking her back to agility - but anyway for those who have spayed an agility dog, how long did you keep them off for? She'll be getting done at the end of the month but I wanted to know in order to consider which shows I'll enter this year.

Thanks guys

Longton Flyball will become famous soon enough
Re: Training After Spay?

I would wait until the stitches are out and give her a month to ensure that she has healed properly and if in doubt wait a little bit longer. Then ease her back into agility slowly just to be sure she's healed.

That's what I would recommend my fellow flyballers.

Re: Training After Spay?

I agree with above post, a month after the op, then ease back in gently, using a lower jump height. I'd do this for a further month, before going back up to full height. Then get someone to look at the dog jumping and make sure they look completely happy. It's not something you can do whilst running with the dog.

You could enter anysize/allsorts classes if you're going to a show to run other dogs.

Re: Training After Spay?

Willow was spayed on Wednesday 4th Jan, I didnt go to obedience training that night obv, but we went back the next week.
So tomorrow will have been three weeks, I am walking her off lead again. But I think I would leave it another week for agility.
So around the month mark me thinks.

Chances are you will have intradermal dissolvable stitchs anyway. Willow had those as well as three outside ones apparanatly more common in the larger breeds.

Re: Training After Spay?

Thanks guys that's really helpful. I did think about lowering her jump height (just a couple of inches off the ground, as she's already small!) but didn't consider having someone else check on her to see that she's comfortable. Great tips!

Re: Training After Spay?

Teagan had a month off of agility after she got speyed, then eased back slowly, small jumps to start with (probably another month before she was jumping full height again).
