Smallest agility dogs?

I'm seriously not joking but I have a JRT X Chihuahua and know nothing about agility but I know he's smart and really fast and jumps quite high (I don't encourage it - he's only 5 months at the mo but he jumps up and down all the time!) and I would love in time to have some fun with him doing something like agility. I certainly wouldn't want to compete or anything. Am I totally ridiculous? Has anyone seen such a thing?? Is the course even small enough?? He's bigger than a chi but not as big as a JRT. x

Re: Smallest agility dogs?

I say go for it. I have a Pug and he had a go at agility last Sunday and he loved it. I was really surprised. Once he mastered that you go over the jumps instead of under them he was well away. As for climbing up the ramps and the see saw there was no problem. The only thing he struggled with was the long jump, he thought you ran up it and not jump over it.

I'm thinking of signing up at my local agility place but its just finding the time.

Have fun

Re: Smallest agility dogs?

Yep, I run agility classes for all breeds. We have a Maltese that comes and does it brilliantly. He does have steps up to the tyre, but he can do everything else with ease. He's fast and he loves it.

Provided the class you select is sympathetic to his/her size and doesn't push to go too fast too early, you should all have a great time.

We have a Cavalier that comes along too, and he's elderly, but has done agility here for 7 years, now, the lowest hurdle is put on the bottom cup one end and the other end is on the grass, he and the handler can choose how high or low he's comfortable jumping, instead of the table we have a mat and he lies on that, we don't do the tyre with him any more as the jolt when he lands might be too much, so we avoid that.

Good luck, shop around for fun agility, but you never know, you could end up competing, that's how I started over 20 years ago!!

Re: Smallest agility dogs?

a friend of mine has the same cross as yours and she is no bigger than a dachshund but loves her agility - only doing foundation stuff at the moment but they will probably go onto compete next year.

Re: Smallest agility dogs?

There's a toy poodle who's an agility champion so why not??? Other dogs competing at the highest levels include Papillons. As long as your dog can tip the seesaw and manage to scramble up the aframe (which is lower these days) and jump you should be fine and why not compete? Enjoy!

Re: Smallest agility dogs?

Your dog wont be too small , as hes a youngster i would start to think about contacting Agility clubs to put your name down for when he is old enough as alot have waiting lists nowdays, my dog is a small dog and loves agility.
