I really just want to do it as an activity and for fun as my dog just loves running around and he has plenty of energy to drain!

Expect older dog to be slower learner than youngster, but with patience.. the event I watched (having begun in spring with 12 month old dog) had Veteran classes.

You might enjoy looking at the Agility Nuts event clips in YouTube, to get an idea what to expect - YouTube - Agility Nuts - Veteran Border Collie - 14th/15th May 2011 Ruddington there's a thread with link here to (see Ruddington) and DT&B thread - Agility Nuts Meet at Ruddingon 14/15th May 2011 has some pics, I posted report thread in DT&B as recently there was a discussion about Agility, so wanted to share what I saw by video.

DT&B - Glossary of acronyms & jargon terms.
Encouraging good behaviours, whilst consistently avoiding practise of bad alternatives leads to extinction of the bad. So if dog sits 6/10 times it doesn't sit 4/10 times, encouraging with the right rewards (positively-reinforcing) enough for 9/10 times means it now fails to sit only 1/10 times, sit 10/10 means...

Thank you so much for the link! I am sure my dog would enjoy it so I will start looking around in my area for agility training facilities that allow older dogs.

Thank you to everybody for your posts!

My dog is coming up to 7 and still faster than some of the younger dogs. I wouldn't say he has taken longer than others to learn, but we do plently of training to keep his brain young and active

I'll warn you though, it is quite addictive!

Well, I'm doing a lot of activities with my dog already but nothing regular and I am sure he would love it! I can imagine that it is addictive if owner and dog are having a good time! That's what I want for my dog, something new to be very excited and I think it would be a good bonding time for us as well.

Re: How to get started with agility?

We've just started agility training and Zac will be six this year. He loves it and is a very active dog as well. I hope you can find a good club to train with. As has been said previously be warned it is highly addictive. Zac and I even do a bit of "street" agility now when walking through our estate. Jumping over cycling gates and weaving through bollards!
