Re: chinchilla

You can handle kits from day one but not for too long as they need to be with mum feeding.
I would leave playtimes cetainlly for a couple of weeks and let mum concentrate on raising the kits.
You can handle her and still give her cuddles but again just not for too long.
?Have you taken dad out of the cage as mum will be in season straight after giving birth and getting pregnant staright away again is not good for her.
It is a good idea to weigh the kits if you can and for the first cople of weeks weigh them daily at the same time to chek for weight gain.
Do not be alarmed if they lose a little in the first couple of days as this is normal whilst mums milk is coming in.

Re: chinchilla

I would not give mum a sand bath for around a week after the birth of the kits. With babies I always dilute cranberry juice and water - I heard somewhere that it helps the milk flow. It may be an old wive's tale, but it has worked with all of my litters.
