Re: chinchilla

As long as you find vet that is experienced in chinchillas then males recover from castration very well.
Obviously there is a small risk as with any operattion but I know of many chins who have been castrated and have been fine.
Have you sexed the baby as the ideal situation would for it to be a girl and then you could have dad castrated and let them live happily together.
Have you taken dad out of the cage now as the female will come into season again straight after birth and will be able to get pregnant again straight away.
This is not good for her as it takes a lot of energy to feed kits without the added complication of being pregnant.
Also make sure you line the floor with paper if you have a wire bottomed cage to prevent legs getting caught.
If you need any help or have any questions just ask.
Out of interest where did you get your chins from?

Re: chinchilla

I have had around 6 males castrated with no problems - the following day they were acting as if nothing had happened. The male can be fertile for 6 - 8 weeks following the operation, so keep him separated from the female. After the op he should not be given a sandbath for about a week.

I usually allow my females access to a bath about 5-7 days after giving birth, but only for around 5 minutes (I keep an eye on her to make sure no kits are squashed as she rolls around!)
