hi there just a quick questian and some advise realy i have adopted a chinchilla from a adoption center close by. they knew very little of how to keep him.

so this poor boy wasfound in a garden with several wounds to his neck and ears.. they could tell me nothing about him or wer he was found. when at the rescue center all alone in a small glass tank with nothing to keep the bordom at bay he had a straw log and a bowl of hamster food....
(am thinking about reporting this to animal cruelty) surely they should of seeked help for him.

Any way i have had him home for almost three weeks now nice big cage,lots of toys, comfortable bed u name it he has it, sand bath that totaly confused him to begin with, food that is good for him..

He seems alert and active at night but im all to well aware that he likes to be handeled but not for long only 5 minuites at the most then does a mad dash around the room.... how do i or will i get him to be calmer around me i try everything its normaly just me and him in a room doors closed so my dog does not interupt or scare him... no noise at all just me and him together..... i talk calmly to him and he still dosent seem to show any sign of becoming a calm chinnie..

anyone have any ideas for me to try as i know he can be a nice boy and has had a hard life so far....

He sounds to have had a rough start in life poor lad. The 'rescue' centre sounds dodgy and obviously has no knowledge of chins if they kept him in a glass tank well done for giving him a good home

Its very early days for him and he will still be getting used to his new surroundings , smells, sights etc . If you sit with him whilst hes out playing he will start to come to you and have a play around you but in all honesty chins are very rarely cuddly animals they much prefer a run around than ever sitting on a mere humans lap

I am sure given time he will settle down and allow you to pick him up but as I say chins are rarely cuddly animals

Time and patience is what is needed and he will come round.
Don't push things too fast and encourage him to come to you and take food from your hands whilst talking gently and you can then allow him to climb onto you and work up from there.
One thing I do find in people who say they cannot handle their chinchilla is that they tend to hold them too tight.Remember that chins are prey animals and if they feel trapped they will struggle.It is important that they feel secure and you are relaxed when handling him.
It will happen just persevere

ok so you all know cozmo went totaly bald and as far as im aware he is ok but is suffering with an allergy to wood stain he will be ok just have to give him tablets wen it plays up

What wood stain does he have access to.
Any wood used in his cage should be untreated??
