Chinchilla Rescues

After looking on Preloved and other classified sites at I surprised at the number of people setting themselves up as rescue for chinchillas. Some appear genuine by saying they will take in your unwanted animals but then will try and rehome for a small fee.

Others say a lifelong home will be given - but then has other adverts offering chinchillas for sale

If you do need to rehome your chinchillas contact a reputable rescue (Chins4life or R and J are all I can think of at the moment) - or contact the breeder who the animals came from, or join one of the dedicated chinchilla forums

I don't know what the situation is like for chins4life but i know that Roman and Jane are always having mountains of chins in and it's simply not fair on them or the chins.

I believe that there are far too many unexperienced breeders producing loads of chins for a 'profit' and it's these hard working rescues that have to pick up the pieces

Re: Chinchilla Rescues

I too have noticed a few springing up Malcolm ( one I know for a fact is very inexperienced ) What worries me is that they take too many chins , are unable to recognise the symptoms of various illnesses etc then the chins they have need rescuing . This has happened in the past and resulted in myself and my OH having around a 300 mile return journey to take chins that the 'rescue' had then neglected through lack of knowledge and experience

Donna from Chins4life is unwell at the moment so not able to take many chins BUT both myself and Graham are still able to take chins and of course always have chins looking for forever homes

It's not just the inexperienced breeders producing loads of chinchillas for a profit, some of the big names are just as guilty

Some of the animals I have been asked to take recently have came from a well-known show breeder, who asked no questions of the new owners and no tips/hints given about care of chinchillas. But they spent well over £250 on two brothers, a cage with accessories and a supply of food - not bad profit for the breeder.

As the chinchillas are not the ideal pet for young children, they found my details and contacted me.
