Re: help

its a chin thing lol, they will also spray pee when startled or feeling exposed or in danger

a litter tray is a very bad idea for a chin, as they are plastic, if he decided to chew on it it could kill him, plastic should never be used for chins, and they arent really litter trainable

the only thing you could try is putting some card around the outside of the cage

have you thought about getting him a friend? chins are highly social animals and a lone chin is never truly happy

Re: help

You could use a glass cooking dish instead of the plastic litter box, alot of people use them and they seem to work great. Its really is a chin thing my Lola will wee over new things in the room and once when i was messing with their toys next to the cage she squirted wee all over me !!! The thing was she actually wasnt finished and leaned back down to finish off She will also wee over my other chinnie Dotty when Dotty tries to show dominance.

I also agree with another chin because they do like to be social, when you get two together its nice to watch them play and cuddle together I have also heard my two girlies talking to each other

Re: help

8 is really not old for a chinchilla, my advise would be to get him neutered and get him a girl friend if he has been picked on in the past, but a boy friend for him would work too as long as you paired them based on personalities

Re: help

I think a boy is better to get for him because i have heard that having chinnies neutered can be expensive and ive heard it puts stress on the chinnies, but saying that i have heard of people that have had their chinnies neutered so i guess its a personal choice. I got my chinnies close in age and i also got a chin that that was the less dominant than the one i already had, at they same time i got them a new cage so it was neutral territory.

neutering is a very simple operation, and is no more expensive then a rabbit neuter (around £36 at my vets) and is relatively risk free if you have a chinchilla savy vet
i have quite a few neutered chinchillas, as does my mum
