Question how old is my chinn?

Hi, i was wondering if there is a certain way that you can tell how old your chin is?
we got him from a rescue centre 4 years ago and they told us he was 13 at the time, so making him 17 now!
I do know that they can live until their 20 but hes a very lively chinn and certainly doesnt act like an oldie LOL ..he has lovely perfect fur, very friendly, & very very lively so it makes me wonder how old he actually is.

so if anyone can suggest anything i will be more than greatful

thanks

Re: how old is my chinn?

Hi there! It's nice to hear from people rescuing their pets instead of getting newborns from mills, etc. Unfortunately, I don't know how you could tell the age of your pet as I've never had a chinchilla and am not familiar with them - but I searched online and it seems that your vet could tell you.

Sorry I can't help further!

On second thought, you might be right. Your chinchilla may be 17 and is still as lively as can be - I have the same thing with my cat. I got him when I was four, I'm turning 18 next month which makes him about 14 years old, which is pretty old for a cat (he's not the skinniest of cats, either), yet he's perfectly healthy, his coat is shiny and smooth and he plays with me and runs about the house as if he doesn't feel a day over 5. It's nice to hear that your chinchilla is healthy and active, I hope he lives a good three more years with you!

I dont think there is a definate way to age a chinchilla. Some colours can become more "washed out" as the chin gets older, and usually the fur around face and eyes gets lighter.

17 (or even 13) is a good age for a chinchilla - you must be looking after him well

yess i dont agree with people buying from breeders as they could have all sorts of problems. when i seen him at the rescue centre i automatically fell in love with him. how can anyone give up these loving animals? i instantly thought ''well if hes 13& in a rescue centre, i want to give him the best life that i can for however long he will live for'' and four years down the line, hes still with us

i wouldnt know what his fur was like before as i said, we got him from a rescue centre. but its pretty much the same from when we got him. also he had conjuncativits when we got him& not sure how long he had it, but due to eye drops & the discharge around his left eye it has gone lighter.

thankyou ..yes definatly looking after him well, hes my baby ..hes treated like royalty haha

Yeah, that's true. It's always so sad when you go to kennels/humane societies/etc. and see all of the poor animals there without homes... I'd like to think that all of them were treated well before they were given up on - which doesn't have to be the case in all of them, sometimes the owners just couldn't care for them anymore and instead of keeping them, wanted them to have better homes.

I can't say I've helped many of those animals because I got my cat 14 years ago from a pet store and my dog from a breeder...

When I lived in Europe for two years, one of my neighbours lived alone, and she was this old lady who took in all of these sick/injured animals from cats to pigeons to fish, etc. She even had a hawk in her backyard who couldn't fly and let me come over whenever I wanted. She'd then release them where they came from, I always thought that was amazing.

yes, i used to work at a rescue centre, and its sad to see how many animals are un-wanted and its not their fault. I wish most people could care for the animals and not give up on them, but when the rescue centres get too full, unfortunatly its the end for them which i strongly disagree.

aww thats lovely what your neighbour did. i like to think that later in the future i can own my on place and rescue as many animals i can lol
