Whats the best substrate?

hey there,

Just wondering what people use as substrate in their chinchilla cages? I currently use bedxcel, megazorb and biocat for my rats and I was wondering if any of these would be good for chinchillas?

Also wondering if it ok to use the wire grill in the bottom of the cage? It's a removeable wire grill so if it's better for them I could take it out. They have lots of shelves to sit on other than the wire bottom.

Re: Whats the best substrate?

Hey,

I use ASPEN bedding. I heard Pine was not that great, and I used that paper substrate you're talking about and it was horrid. It smells really bad and it starts smelling quickly, like maybe a day after I put in in my Chin's cage. The Aspen is apparently the best and it's not treated with anything or has any additives as far as irritating perfumes. He seems to enjoy it and it doesn't smell up my room!

As far as the wire, no, don't use that. They have very small feet and they cam easily get stuck in the wires, even if they're small. Good thing it's removable, because you shouldn't use it.

Hope that helps,

Kristen
