Chinchilla Companion needed

Hi,
I am new to this site,
we recently found a chinchilla, we have taken him to the vets and found out that he is around 4-6 yrs old. He is very tame and loves human interaction, we would like to get him a little friend. This is our first chinchilla and he is doing brillantly so far.
Would pairing him up with a female be better than a male?
Would he live with another male?
Any info appreciated.

Re: Chinchilla Companion needed

Please get him neutered before pairing him with a female. As his history is unknown it would not be advisable to breed him with the all too common occurance of tooth problems being known in chinchillas.

However, Chinchillas of any sex require carefull introductions entailing the use of a seperate cage for a while. More about this process can be found on forums such as Chinchilla World or Chinchillas Unlimited. (do a google, you'll soon find them!)

Re: Chinchilla Companion needed

Well I keep a group of three and a group of four. You can have any size group you like I suppose providig that you can give them a big enough cage or enclosure. Two together is fine though.

Oh and a great place to get cages from (even have them made to your requirements) is John Hopewell (Marketing) Rotherham South Yorkshire, Chinchilla Cages - Degu Cage - Degus Exercise Wheels - Cages - Animal Cages - Rat Cage - Ezi-Filla - Ezi - Easy - Automatic Water Drinking Systems - Guinea Pig Runs - Rabbit Feed Hoppers - Birds - I have had loads of stuff from him and always had good service. A nice man to deal with.

Re: Chinchilla Companion needed

One more question Caroline. Are your two groups mixed or boys in more girls in another and are they related. Sorry to be a pain.

Re: Chinchilla Companion needed

None of mine are related. I have one neutered male with two girls and one neutered male with three girls. Males must never ever be kept together, neutered or not, with girls in the same cage or even the same room as they will fight to the death over them.
