chinchilla fur pulling?
Hi, we rescued our chin from a friend of a friend who was being made homeless, all he could tell us was that he thought it was a girl and she lost patches of hair when it was hot.
I'm pretty sure that our chin is actually a boy and we think he pulls out hair when he is stressed. We're hoping to rescue him a girlfriend and get him neutered, but I want to see if anyone has any experience of fur pulling in chins and will he pull his friends fur, or will she help calm him? Thanks for any advice. ![]() |

Re: chinchilla fur pulling?
normaly chinchillas do molt and they look stupid lol but the fur pulling couls be stressed from moving into a new place and not knowing where he/she is they do well in pair so get him neutured if male u can see his balls lol but if u have changed his cage when he moved too this could cause stress.

Re: chinchilla fur pulling?
Fur chewing in chinchillas can be either a temporary reaction to a stressful event or it can be a lifelong habit, thought by some to be hereditary. Whole breeding lines of chinchillas have been found to be fur chewers.
Provide plenty of things to chew and lots of hay in the meantime and regular sand baths, putting the sand bath in for a couple of hours two or three times a week rather than leaving it in all the time just to end up soiled. Chins should also never be allowed to get hot - I have an airconditioning unit and two fans going in the shed where my 7 chinchillas and 11 guinea pigs live. They do not need heat, they need a cool, dry atmosphere. Nice website just for chinchilla owners here - http://www.chinchillaworld.com/ |
