Neuturing and Showing

HI all
was in bed last night (middle of the night) and suddenly occured to me that as Stan and Ollie are due to be neutured on 12th Oct the vet will be shaving them!!!!!!! Now I'm panciking as the South Cheshire show is on 14th Nov which will give the hair about 4 weeks to grow back.

Would my boys be marked down if they were a bit short on hair in the never regions????

Surely if they have been neutured then this will be ok?

Thanks
Allison

Re: Neuturing and Showing

Oh great thank god for that one more worry off my mind!! lol

I will ask the vet to be careful especially with Ollie being a maine coon. don't wnat him too bald!!!lol

And they don't have to go back for stitches etc so I'm sure 4 weeks will be plenty of time for them to get over their op.

Thanks again
Allison

Re: Neuturing and Showing

yes, be sure to tell the vet they are show cats and ask them to shave as little as possible! i showed my boy about 5 weeks after his neutering no probs. as i say just be sure you are happy that the wounds are nice and healed as you don't want them to pick anything up at the show etc..

Re: Neuturing and Showing

Don't remember any evidence of shaving or in fact anything following our boys castration. To the extent we actually wondered if and how the procedure was carried out! Obvious now he's missing something lol

Re: Neuturing and Showing

Tell the vet not to shave, they should write it on the consent form. The only bit they shave for boys being neutered is their leg for the anaesthetic. Its not necessary to shave the leg, it just makes it easier for them. Their balls just get plucked a bit. Although I do know of someone who took their boy in for neutering and obviously a new unsupervised vet nurse shaved his backside and not very neatly either.

Re: Neuturing and Showing

Hi
just rang my vets and they have reassured me that as they are show cats they will not shave at all, great news!!! So one less thing to worry about!

Thanks for all your advice

Re: Neuturing and Showing

I've actually watched a castration, it made me wince abit I have to say! They pluck the little balls, make a tiny slit with a kind of soldering iron thing and then pop out the bits and tie them off. All done in about 5 mins. He should have some fluff there by the time you go to your show, I would ask them to wet the fur on the leg too instead of shaving if they can .
