Re: How Long ......

Plus they mustn't still be lactating. They can have milk still for much longer than 12/14 weeks after birth, especially if they still have their kittens around them.

Re: How Long ......

Thats imprinted on my mind, seeing as I showed a kitten and his Mum, 5 yrs ago now. The kitten was 15 weeks old, all his litter mates had gone, and Mum was going for her 1st Gr cert. I had kept them apart for 2 weeks prior to the show and all her milk had dried up - or so I thought! Just travelling with him to the show was enough to bring it back in. The vet at vetting in noticed, was very nice about it, but rules are rules, which I accepted, I was just very embarrassed.

I was allowed to pen her, but the rather unpleasant show management made a huge thing of placing a large note written in red pen "DO NOT JUDGE" on her pen, drawing massive attention to it all, making me feel as though I was some kind of deviant criminal. I have never and would never go back to that show again because of that

Gosh, how rude! Dont blame you not going back.

I always feel sorry for mom when they get that old and are still suckling, they seem to just mob her and she cant get away.
I cant listen to kittens crying for their mom though either, ive got a little dog t-shirt I use , but if your not watching you can garauntee, one will nuzzle his way under, funny in an odd sort of way

Re: How Long ......

I wouldn't have separated them if they were distressed, sod the show. But I was young and naive back then it was my first litter, taking the 12 weeks bit from the GCCF rules, I thought at the time entering the show that as the date would be 3 weeks on from there it would be fine. Ah you live and learn I would never enter a girl into a show now unless there was at least 2 clear months from kittens going now and the date of the show, just to make sure.

The show management were very rude, OTT and unnecessary, you'd think I had tried to show a girl who had just given birth the way they behaved - even though her son was in the pen next to her for all to see. Judging by their ever dwindling numbers I don't think I am the only exhibitor who has voted with their feet for one reason or another.
