Training lots of cats to use a specific area for toilet

Hello all,

We have a lot of cats! 6 in total (mother, 3 years old and 5 kittens, 11 months old - all neutered and vaccinated). Several months ago, we trained the kittens to use our garden and the nearby forest as a toilet and we thought that that was the end of that. Unfortunately, this is not the case and the cats have been using the neighbourhood gardens as toilets, much to the anger of some of our neighbours. We do not wish the fall out with our neighbours and it is also not fair for them to have to clean up our pets' mess. We have had a look at various cat repellents but they do not seem to be long term solutions and would require neighbours to put a lot of effort into reapplying them, which does not seem practical. To us, the ideal solution would be to train all the cats to use just our garden as a toilet.

So I guess the question is, how can we train these cats, who have already spent several months using other gardens as toilets, to do their business in a specific place in our property?

Thanks

Have you considered cat proof fencing in your garden to keep them contained? I'm currently looking at felisafe - purrfect fencing - secure a car - and katsecure to cost them out and see what looks most effective.

Hi CatLover,

Thanks for the advice. I'll check out those companies.

Any other suggestions? We're thinking of getting several kennel-like structures, putting boxes of cat litter in them which we would regularly clean, and trying to show them to the cats to get them to use those as their toilets.

If I keep an area of my garden really well dug over, quite close to the house, I find my cats will use it and not go into the neighbours' gardens to toilet.
