Baby kitten and litter try with flap!

Hey all,

Well baby Anneka is settling in very nicely and is keeping us very busy and entertained! One thing we're having trouble with is her litter tray. It's one of these ones with a hood and flap on front to contain the smells as much as possible. She's using it perfectly fine without the flap on.. but whenever we put it on she doesnt seem to know what to do!

Does anyone have any ideas or experience with these types of litter trays? I've tried placing her in the door myself, putting a plastic ball in there, pushing the door with my finger to let her in.. but she just paws at it. If she jumps in after a toy, she will jump out herself ok.. so I know she can do it!

Cheers,
Peter

Hi Peter. Keep doing the toy thing and encouraging her by putting her in several times a day with the flap on, she will get it eventually. Kittens are like toddlers, lol, they learn from repeatition.
Glad she's settled in otherwise.

you could always leave the door off and provide a food which reduces litter box odour??

Re: Baby kitten and litter try with flap!

Ive never used these as think that might smell a bit strong inside and cats wont like it! you wont have any problems with a open tray as long as you remove poos asap and wash and empty regularly

I'm not sure I know what that could be? I feed her Orijen and Applaws. Can't think of anything better myself.

I ended up taking the doors of my litter trays as they used to set up ambushes for each other! Its not funny when you get trapped in the lav after dropping a stinker!!

Re: Baby kitten and litter try with flap!

Hi, we've always just used a normal open litter tray. Think the type of litter you use goes to solve the stink problems. We've tried the cheapest ones to the more exp ones. Find the supermarkets own brand that clumps are the best for ours. Never really found it to smell too much, just clear it out with the scoop and nappy bag

Suppose the covered ones would be good if you had a cat who insisted on flicking cat litter all over the floor though.
