another cat?

Hello.

I have a 5 year old male cat.He was just recently neutered and has finally stopped spraying the house...the vet says he is dominant.Yesterday i saw the most darling kitten at the shelter(she's not the world's prettiest cat and for that reason has been there for quite a while).I fell in love with her and have begun considering adopting a new cat.Do you think that is a wise thing to do given our cat being dominant?Which sex combinations work best? Our cat LOVES to play and can never get enough...so i thought a companian might be good...but i must admit that he likes to play rough at times (i know, bad training on our part). The more i read about it the more confused i get!Do cats need or enjoy other cats around? Would he just be angry at us???Though i would love another cat around, our existing cat's happiness is more important. Our house is quite large with lots of space.
Could you please help???

Thank you

Re: another cat?

Absolutely cats like having other cats around - well some more than others - not sure where the bit about them being fiercely independent came from actually, I know some cats deal fine with being on their own - but I know mine absolutely love each other!
My friends have Bubbles, a 5 year old pretty dominant large white Persian x Ginger neutered tom (gorgeous, literally a mix of the two) and 4 months ago they got our kittens' litter sister. His nose was put a little out of joint at first but now he adores his lil friend. He gently cuffs her and plays with her, is quite protective over her and its charming to see, especially with their size difference. I would think if your cat's a dominant male and as he's not a "teen" any more that a female would be preferable - wouldn't you? Also girls know how to claim their space and knowing little queens I bet she's more evil to him at first Good luck, I hope you do get her x

Re: another cat?

Ive got an 8 month old cat and decided to get another kitten. At first they were growling at each other. Now they play fight and run riot around the house. They are both males.

Re: another cat?

Most cats like companions and some don't so much. Either way cats have a hierarchy system and work it out for themselves. My parents have had cats that don't get along, but tolerate each other. Currently they have two young'uns who play together, sleep together and play fight together. Frodo (the eldest of the two) can play rough, but Billy (younger) just gives it straight back
I really can't see a problem unless your 5yr old is a complete nutcase. And he doesn't sound it.
If you've fallen for the kitten I'd go for it

Re: another cat?

Thank you to everyone for your helpful replies.
I went back to the shelter this week and to my great surprise the little kitten had already been adopted! I guess IŽll take this as a sign and just hold out for a while before I make a decision to get another cat. I just hope the little darling is happy in her new home...
Our own cat has been a little under the weather these past few days. The vet says it's nothing to be worried about but he's getting our undivided attention for the moment being!
Thanks again for all your help and if we do go ahead with our second adoption I'll most certainly be back in touch!!!
