When is the right time??

I have 2 7 month old kittys, a male and a female. The male can't wait to go out, he often goes out in the back garden ( a huge garden with very tall fences) but today he escaped as the terrible wind blew my normally sturdy back gate open. He ran into next doors garden. I know he will go out one day so how can I being myself to stop mothering him and 'saving' him?!
He ran quite erratically down the street so i'm scared he wont be safe when the time comes to let him out. My street is very quiet and rarely have cars coming down. Is it safe to just let him out?

I hope this thread makes sense!

Re: When is the right time??

It's up to you. I personally have my cats as indoor cats because even in quiet streets they can get killed. Have you considered keepking them indoors? or, buying/building a cat run?

If you want, send them out hungry and then rattle some food so they come back.

I agree with Biawhiska. But try to make sure your around when you let them out and to start with, try restricting the amount of time you let them out. This will get them used to your garden and allow them to find good spots for exiting and entering.
All cats are at risk when they go out, but if it's fairly quiet where you are then I don't see a problem. If they are out of your sight just rattle the treats to bring them back. That way they shouldn't stray too far.
