Does my Cat hate my best friends?!

Hi,

My best friends cat had a litter of kittens over a year ago and I adopted the cutest kitten.

He has been fine with my friends until recently, but now he hisses, growls, bites and claws at them constantly while they are in the house. We are now having to shut him away when they are around.

But he does not harbour this hate for anyone else and strangers having not met him before he is fine with also, it is just my two friends he seems to loath.

He is an indoor male cat who always gets lots of attention from everyone.

Has anyone ever had anything like this before? Or have any idea why he could be acting like this? and only with these two people?

Any advise much appreciated

Vicki

Does he do this when they try to hold him? What happens if they just ignore him?

Re: Does my Cat hate my best friends?!

He just doesnt like them being in the house at all. They ignore him and he follows them hissing and growling. The other day my friends were round and just sat talking in the dining room, suddenly a claw comes out of nowhere and narrowly misses my friend.

We cannot understand it as he grew up with them as a kitten and has never had any problems with them until the last few months. I want to get something done, but hate inviting them round to mine due to their own safety and also because I dont want to upset my cat, but it is proving difficult.

This is very strange!! Do they have cats or any other animals? Is it possible he's smelling the scent on them and getting threatened?

Re: Does my Cat hate my best friends?!

I thought it could be that, as they do have a rabbit, hamster, fish and a relative they visit often has another male kitten, but whenever I am round their home I cuddle the rabbit and hamster, and have played with the other cat but he never shows any problems to me.

Also my mums friend has another male cat (max), and my friend from work also has a male cat (harry) and they never have any problems with him.

The only thing we could think could be causing it is , some months ago, my best friend kim (one of the two Smudge is having problems with) brought her sister and nephew matthew round. Matthew was only about 8 months old and was as curious about smudge as smudge was about him, but at one point Matthew did not see smudge was there and while playing hit his hand on the floor causing smudge to jump back scared, I comforted him and he was fine, but as soon as my friend and her sister went to leave, he started hissing and growling at them.

Kim's sister and baby have not been back, but now every time Kim and her partner James (my 2nd best friend) come over he attacks them constantly.

Last time they were round my mother suggested that maybe they used the same washing powder as kim;s sister and becasue they smelt the same that this could be causing it.

At a long shot my friends changed their washing powder, and although he still doesnt like attention from them he doesnt attack them anymore and just leaves them alone.

Does any of this make sense or sound right? I'm worried my cat's loopy! haha!

Thanks

Vicki

Re: Does my Cat hate my best friends?!

Cats have long memories lol I would think that the experience just made him wary of people coming into the home. Being an only indoor cat he probably doesnt like the attention being away from him either, cats are strange lol
