1 year old not using litter tray

Can anyone advise on this issue we have.
We have a 1 year old who up until recently has been happy to poo in the litter tray alongside our 2 other cats.
However in the last month or so he has decided to poo in the corner of the kitchen.I dont know why .He likes to be outside to roam -& he has been allowed to do so.I have watched him look at the litter tray -but be unsure as to whether to go in.We have had no previous problems with him using the tray.

Its clearly some form of behavioural issue -any views on how we can stop it ?

Re: 1 year old not using litter tray

just wondered if you have moved the tray at all? Maybe something outside has scared him? I would probably try getting another tray for him to use in the kitchen.

Re: 1 year old not using litter tray

Hi,

I have not moved the tray at all. He did it again yesterady morning. Its almost like he is saying if you dont let me out I will do it -so I dont think anything outside has scared him.My husband suggested putting a litter tray near to wher he is doing this -but I thought this would just encourage him to poo there & I didnt want a litter tray in the kitchen.

Help !!!

Re: 1 year old not using litter tray

I would buy another litter tray and place it where he is preferring to toilet.

Make sure you use the same litter he is used to, avoid scented stuff you can buy to put in with the litter.

I have three cats, who have two corner hooded litter trays, one open top oval litter tray with a lip round, and an open corner litter tray.

I have heard said that litter trays have to be kept clean as soon as they soil clean it up, but mine will use the same litter tray in quick succession of each other. My previous cats would toilet as soon as I cleaned it, that really was a nightmare.

I did have a cat that preferred to poo in the bath, and wee in the toilet I put a litter tray in the bath and that resolved the poo problem. I didn't mind him using the toilet, I just wished he could have flushed it.
I am being serious he did wee in the toilet.

Re: 1 year old not using litter tray

It may be that he has been scared whilst actually poohing in the litter tray - perhaps by one of the other cats or perhaps a loud noise and he now associates the tray with that - hence poohing elsewhere. Do think you should get another litter tray; if you have an open one - get a covered one and I think it may be an idea to try a different type of litter. If you have non-clumping try a clumping or vice versa.

Is it possible to put their food in the corner of the kitchen where he is poohing - cats do not like to toilet near their food.
