Normal behaviour for a five month old cat?

Hello all, you were so helpful before, can you do it again??

My five month old cat/kitten has a very insistent habit of climbing up on my chest, putting his paws round my neck and tucking his head under my chin, then intensely kneading, dribbling on my neck, and purring VERY loudly! I honestly think he would do it all day if I let him.

I know cats knead and purr when they are happy (after the start in lfe he had, I'm really pleased he's so happy with me) but is this normal? I don't want to push him off all the time, but I'm a bit concerned he does it so much.

I read somewhere that dribbling shows how happy they are, somewhere else that it means he was taken away from his mum too soon...

I'd welcome your views and advice.

Re: Normal behaviour for a five month old cat?

At a guess I would say he is either just a very snuggly cat or mildly anxious and requiring reassurance over something.

Has he always done it or is it a recent thing? If it gets to be a bother then just have a designated time of day for cuddles, but rest of the time distract with a toy or activity. Maybe wear an old jumper for a few days then leave it where he can snuggle it if he feels anxious.

I would agree with IndysMamma and her advice. Cats purr for all sorts of reasons and no one is absolutely sure about the purr but they do purr when in pain or distress to comfort themselves also. I'm not suggesting your cat is in pain but may be a sign of comforting rather than being happy.

My girl Tia would do this all day if I let her! Some cats are just more affectionate I think! If he is eating/drinking/pooping/playing as normal then you just have a very loving cat there!

Re: Normal behaviour for a five month old cat?

Thank you everyone for your views. He is indeed pooping, eating, playing and generally behaving as a five month old should, and he shows no other signs of distress at all. While I appreciate, we can't know for sure, I do think he is happy here - he is extremely relaxed when he is not tearing the place up and haring around like Rocket Dog! As I speak, he is laying on the table next to the laptop, washing his face after dinner, and occasionally nibbling the corner of my new management book...

I will keep an eye on him though, and make sure he gets lots of reassurance and calm stroking. I suspect I will be woken at 5am for some time to come by him sitting on my head then snuggling up. That's not too bad, it's the dribbling in my ear I don't like!
