Hi
We've had our lovely ball of fluff for 5 weeks now. I love him to tiny pieces, and he loves us too - he'll happily sleep on us and purr his heart out. However being a youngester (12 weeks old) he loves to play. We have tons of toys for him, but he uses all his excitement on us instead, I have shredded hands!! I'm sure it is just an age thing but my partner is starting to go spare and has asked me to look up more "intervention" ideas. We have a water spray, but our Padawan (that's his name - we are Star Wars fans!) seems to find this spray quite fun. He also loves watching us shower so I think water isn't a big problem to him. I have tried the "Time out" idea too. He tends to come out of Time Out even more excited though. Any more ideas? I guess I could increase the whole Time Out thing, but I hate leaving him stuck in a room alone. Could really use some advice as I love my kitten. I just don't recall any of the cats I had when I was younger being so excitable! |

Re: Kitty is beating us up!
It's normal kitten behavoiur. What about the dangly toys on sticks, we have tons of those for kittens, that way they can jump about and use up energy without you having shredded hands, lol. Cats/kittens don't understand timeout. If you shut them up, they just exert more energy after. Do you have climbers ect for him ? they are a good energy buster

Thanks for the Headsup on time out, I really thought it wasn't working. We have a scratching post with lots of dangly things hanging off of it, but he doesn't really like it. He prefers his furry tube, toy dog (which he is destroying ) and ping-pong balls.I try to use up his energy these ways but I guess he has more than I can keep up with! He climbs up my legs, attacks my hands, bites feet. Normal crazy cat things, but just very unrelenting ![]() |

Re: Kitty is beating us up!
Had a quick thought - when he does do best to stop play and pop him next to a toy he can scratch - he'll probably think this is a great game and enjoy being popped back and forth - also try a firm 'no'. He'll stop - look like if he was a person he'd laugh and then carry on exactly what he's doing - in my experience

Re: Kitty is beating us up!
Yeh I dont think you can stop a kitten using his claws.. as said above use things like sticks with dangly things in the end so you can interact with him but he's not going for your hand!
I trim Alfie's claws when they get too sharp which helps a bit also because they are more blunt so dont break your skin. If you do try and clip his claws (I do front only) then do it when he's sleepy! ![]()

Re: Kitty is beating us up!
Funny really..... I just been looking at my 4year old daughters hands thinking "dad is gonna kill me tomorrow" We both have shredded hands, now we dont mind, but my dad isnt the biggest cat fan and as proof asked me if Ollies kitten pack came inclusive of polly bag and brick lol.
Ive found that nothing works with Ollie except when i cry out "ouch!" and then refuse to play with him, The time out wont work on your kit, but will give you 5mins of peace I do it with Ollie. He will poke his head up at me and purr and when i go to stroke him he will do the same and grab my hand and attack. Daft as it sounds i use a tea-tree/coconut/aloe vera handcream so he doesnt like the taste haha, My hands are now re-gaining a non battered effect Maybe that would help, also the "Ouch!" Hope something works, but i agree with everyone above its just an age thing, and if all else fails........... LEATHER GLOVES! ![]() ![]() ![]()

Re: Kitty is beating us up!
Don't know the answer.
My cat is nearly 6 and still does it. One minute he is fine having a fuss and playing and then he is ripping my arm to shreads. His favourite game is to hide somewhere, and lunge at your leg as you go past then sink his teeth and claws into the back of your knee!! ![]() I was told that in his case, it is because he left his mother too early before he had learnt proper manners, and that the best thing to do when he got to much, was to move away and ignore him until he calmed down! (easier said than done when there is a cat hanging off your leg!!!) ![]() love the name! |

Re: Kitty is beating us up!
Had a thought for you. Cat nip
you can get it in packets from pets at home ect. If you sprinkle some about his climber he should go on there and roll about ect. He might try & eat it, but don't worry, it won't hurt him, mine do it all the time. Just keep you're hands out of the way as they go loopy, lol |
