Litter tray confusion

Please help. I have 2, 15 week old kittens which I have now had for the last two weeks. They are very healthy, friendly and playful. Last week they had their first vaccinations and were given a clean bill of health from the vet.

Since they moved in with me they have been using the litter tray fastidiously (or so I thought). Last night the boy kitten jumped up on to the sofa, where I was watching tv, sat on my feet and did a pee (obviously trying to tell me something)! I said 'no', picked him up and took him to the litter tray.

It was only then that I discovered that the bed I had bought them (they never sleep in it - always curled up on the sofa) was soaking with cat pee. It would appear that they are using the litter tray for poos and the bed for pees.

I have now disinfected the area and put the litter tray where the bed was in the hope of encouraging them to pee and poo in the same place. I have put them both in the litter tray to show them where it now is. Do you think this was the right course of action?

Ultimately they will be outdoor cats, but only after they've been neutered and microchipped, which won't be until February 2010. However, before I got them (at 13 weeks) they had been in a household of 12 kittens (2 adult cats gave birth to litters within a few days of each other) and were allowed to roam around outside from when they could walk. I get the impression they had a bit of a 'feral' existence before they came here. Am I expecting too much? What can I do to make them more at home?

Any thoughts and advise would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: Litter tray confusion

Some cats like to wee in one place and poo in another - try an extra litter tray for a while.

Also make sure you clean the areas they have been using with a specialist cleaner or bio washing powder, as they can smell stuff that we can't and inadequate cleaning will encourage them to revisit places if not cleaned well enough.

Hi, I'd agree with Spid... more litter trays is the way forward! Our two cats like to use one tray for poos and one for wees Good luck x

Re: Litter tray confusion

Thank you so much for your advise and encouragement. I can see this site is about to become part of my life!

Do cats get confused if you move the litter trays about. We'll probably have to move them if we're going to have 2.

Thanks again.

Re: Litter tray confusion

They were probably not litter trained and I would try and keep 1 of the trays where it has always been. Good luck.

Re: Litter tray confusion

Did you disinfect the area with a special cat stain and odor remover? It's just many cleaners contain ammonia which will just make the area more enticing for the kitties to pee there. The stain remover should contain enzymes which will neutralize the smell. Vinegar and water can also work.
