Cat obsessed over food

We have 2 cats, sooty and sweep who are brothers and are now 2 years old.

On the whole sweep is a well beheived cat, but sooty is becoming increasingly badly beheived and it is always to do with food.

We can't get anything out of the fridge, cook, eat or leave anything edable out without him jumping up and attempting to eat it. No matter how many times we put him down, move him away or try to stop him he will persist and keep trying to get the food.
We can't open the pantry door or the fridge without him getting in. When he does get his teeth into something he will devour it all. He has even gone as far as knocking a full saucepan of chilli off the cooker and onto the floor.

It has got to a point where we can no longer control him and don't know what to do. As there is almost always food around we can't just keep him locked up all the time.
When we do put him in another room he will just cry and whine until he is left out and then the first thing he will do is search for the food.

When he is not after food he is a loving and affectionate cat, but he is driving us mad with his obsession.

Re: Cat obsessed over food

Neither cats are under/over weight.
Both are healthy and are fed twice a day.

Re: Cat obsessed over food

I have the same problem with my 2 kittens. This is why i came here to see if i can find a sollution.

Ours are fed well - 3 times per day (they're still babies). But you cant literally feed them a full bowl, and if we are having our tea at the same time as soon as they are finished they run down stairs to try and pinch ours. And boy are they determined.

One of mine once balance on my head, then across my arm to pinch a doughnut lol!

For now we have to lock them out every time we eat, but we have the same issue. As they are so young anythin other that kitten food upsets there tummies a little but they are so good at sneaking into the kitchen and raiding anything that resembles food.

If anyone has any hints on how we can try and control this it would be greatly appreciated.

As amusing as it is to see them running around the dining room like its an easter egg hunt, I would prefer it if I was able to at least have a cup of tea and a biscuit without having to hide it from my cats lol

:-)

Would suggest splitting their meals perhaps and feeding three times a day or invest in a treat ball which you could put some dry food in (or his favourite treats) and let him bat that around trying to get the treats out of it. Will keep him occupied.

Play-'n- Treat™ Balls (2 pack) - £2.50 : Pinky Pawz - Simply ... the cats whiskers!, Pinky Pawz - Simply ... the cats whiskers!
