new kitten problems

Hi,

A couple of weeks ago I got an 8 week old kitten - shes adorable but she tries to get into everything. i dont mind her scartching the furniture or jumps on the couches but i do mind when she jumps on the kitchen table. how do i teach her not to jump/walk on the kitchen table and counters?

Fraid this is what cats do! Mine know they aren't allowed on the kitchen table but when my back is turned thats where they go! You could try putting her back on the floor every time she does it, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Same here Lynsey, lol. Cats like to be up on things, so it's unlikely you will stop them. I have a table cloth on my table so if they do go on it, it does'nt matter. I can just take it off beore anyone sits down to eat.

Yeah, I have got one of those wipe clean ones, brilliant things! That was the first place Minstrel jumped onto when the deer in the garden scared the pants off her! They like the height.

Re: new kitten problems

Run your hand under the tap and flick the water at her - she will learn and its a better way to tell them off without scalding them. Worked a treat with mine

Re: new kitten problems

All my cats have jumped on the table/work tops. What I do is say a very firm 'No....(name of cat) ' and pick them up and put them on the floor.

But I know from experience that once they 'learn' to 'obey' in fact, they will be very, very sneaky in doing exactly what they want, and extremely guilty at being caught

Best to clear worktops of food as soon as done and wipe down frequently. Stack in the dishwasher or do the washing up as soon as the meal is finished
