cat biting

My MIL moved house a few months ago and is getting a new house next week.
Her cat has just started to bite her, or anyone that touches him. He is usually non aggressive but now bites all the time.
Before he moved in to the new house he was always out hunting in the fields, now he lives in a cul de sac with no back garden or fields nearby. He still has access to outside though.
My OH is currently staying at the house and the cat jumped up onto the bed this morning and after being stroked he turned around and bit my OH on the hand.
Not sure what the reason for the behaviour is, but this has only just started in the last few weeks, he seemed happier before.
Is there anything she can do to stop him biting. He has been neutered and is about 2 years old.

Re: cat biting

The best way to stop a cat from biting is to spray it with water the moment it bites.
Try finding out the reason why the cat is biting. Cats bite when they are fearful or frustrated. They also bite affectionately bite a person they like. Kittens usually bite out of playfulness, or when they are teething. Most of the time it's easy to tell why the cat is biting (eg, if the cat lays back it's ears, it's biting out of fear, if it runs after you/pounces on you, it's probably just playfulness) .Once you have found out why the cat is biting, you should work on stopping him.

Re: cat biting

Lot's of cat's bite because the owner's have used their hand's in play when they were kittens & so it end's up being a bad habbit they cannot shake.
Also it's a way they say enough is enough, I want to be left alone now.
They cannot talk & say ok tired of this game now, so don't over play.... Wach for sign's, tail swishing, ears back. Hopefully folk would stop before they get to this point.

Re: cat biting

So may be the folk who are aggrevating the cat's in the first place & who have started the bad habbit of biting should get a big bucket of water over them, only fair if the cat is getting water sprayed, when it's doing naughties

Smile Re: cat biting

I am having the same problem with my neutred persian at 14 months.I did used to tease him with my hands occasionally and I think I have created a bad habit. He lets me stroke him a while and then bites but he rarely breaks any skin although today He almost did on the back of my hand. He seems to say OK enough of this now come and play ball with me. lol.

Re: cat biting

Sonny's 15 month i've had him three weeks and hes stratched and bit me loads the last week and broken the skin three times nowand really hurt

It always comes out of the blue just sitting on my lap happy for a while then a mad frenzy then fine again

I never play with toys close up they are on sticks like fishing rod types

Its had me quite upset the last couple of times but i don't know what i can do other than tell him no in a stern but not shouting tone apart from have a water bottle constantly on hand as it happens so quick then hes nice again

I wanna know if the biting is somehow related to pregnancy? coz my baby's pregnant and i noticed she's a lil bit grumpier than usual. thanks.

Spraying does work. I've never heard of cats biting in pregnancy, but i suppose it is possible.
