Introducing cat to newcomers

Just adopted 2 neutered Maine Coons, one 2 year old male and one 3 year old female.

Before that I had 15 year old neutered male MC who died in March. In addition we were adopted by a female neutered white cat who has gradually gone from totally wild, living off frogs and mice she caught and food we put out to coming in during day to sleep with our now deceased MC, but wanting to be out at night, whatever the weather. This over a period of about 5 years, I think.

The 2 year old needed booster injections which he got yesterday. So although the cats had been able to see each other through the kitchen window, I only let the white cat in yesterday - but she is quite aggressive especially to the female MC.

What should I do? What is 'normal'? Although the white cat has never been particularly friendly to me, she has let me stroke her in the last couple of months and I do feel a responsibility towards her. I work during the day too, so for the moment white cat is outside.

Re: Introducing cat to newcomers

It's normal for cats to be hissy when they 1st meet, they are very territorial I would be more worried about what the white cat has if it's semi-wild. I take it the it has'nt had any needles ect, if you can't get near it ? It could also have FIV ect, which if it is aggressive and bites one of yours would'nt be good at all. I can understand that you feel responsible, so could you not have some kind of shelter outside for white cat ? then have food, water whatever it needs out there. Just some ideas for you.

Re: Introducing cat to newcomers

When i got peanuts she hid under the wardrobe for 2 weeks n only came out to eat n sleep, she was very nasty to my other kitten and myself. It got that bad i looked at taking her back but fortunatly i was very patient and now after 6 months she is a brill cat very friendly n happy to play with snoopy.
I think loads of time and patience is required

Re: Introducing cat to newcomers

The white cat is fat, energetic and healthy as far as I can see. Te area we live in isn't conducive to feral cat living. I suspect this cat was turfed out by owners - otherwise how come she is neutered?

But... it worries me that she may be FIV +ve. Yet I feel a responsibility to her - because she is fat and sleek she does not seem to me to fit into 'rescue cat' category.

Think I will ring Cat protection League and ask advice ......

OK you all may lambast me for this but I don't see her as my cat....want to do the best for her but I am not having my MCs intimidated by her or threatened by her. She doesn't even like me...but likes my sons

Will ring CPL tomorrow

Re: Introducing cat to newcomers

On a positive note, I have just taken in Purdy, a white Persian cross. She is a spayed female and came from a farm and was used to living/going outside. One week down the line, she has now settled in nicely with all my Persian girls in the main lounge, has the odd hiss if they come too near but has become very affectionate with me. She doesnt go out and is showing no desire too, e.g. crying at windows/doors anything like that and seems really content now.

I would say persevere and all could come right, it sometimes just takes time and patience. C.x.
