Cat attacks mop, then me...

Hi all.

New to this site so be gentle

I have a female all white cat that will be 3 this June.
I live on a 2nd floor flat so she has always been an indoor cat.

She has never liked the mop but having laminate kitchen and bathroom floors they need cleaning with a mop.

The other day, I got the mop out and for some unknown reason she went completely crazy and shredded it to bits, meowing like crazy and hissing.

She calmed down after a few minutes and started purring and wanting fuss so I gave her the fuss she was after. I moved my hand up to scratch my head and she immediately went mad again and ripped my hand to bits, then jumped down and did the same to my leg.

While she has attacked it before she has never attacked it so wildly and it bemuses me why she seems threatened by it.

Is there anyway I can get her to not be scared by the mop? I know I could shut her in another room while I mop but I dont like doing that to her.

Andy

I don't know why she does it - she sounds VERY frightened. I'd shut she out of the room , it's not cruel as it stops her being frightened. She may need to see a vet as if she is in pain it can cause her to act like this.

Quite worrying especially as she attacked you too - hope the injuries are not too bad
Have you changed the mop recently or your floor cleaner? Could it have a different smell that she doesn't like?
I always shut my young cat away when mopping the floor mainly to avoid the mess of her skating around a wet kitchen floor I don't think it does any harm and if your cat is afraid of the mop it might be the best solution

Re: Cat attacks mop, then me...

spid - I may just take her to the vets and have her checked out. I do go out in the day and we all know cats are curious Although that said, there isn't much for her to hurt herself on in my flat and she can't get outdoors at all.

lymorelynn - I think she may have attacked me as she didn't see my hand go up to my head until it was there. She was frightened of the mop when I first got her but never to this extent. She's seen it before, growled at it then just walked away. Maybe she thought "not this time, I'm gonna have you!".

It is also a new mop-head so that could be part of it. I think from now on she can stay in the bedroom while I mop. Saves the mop (and my legs ) being shredded!

Hand wasn't too bad but I have 2 lovely long scratches on my leg where she slid back down

But I'm more concerned about her than myself

Sounds like fear - or pain. So having her checked with the vet is wise. A pet cat should not attack its owner (though it can happen when in great fear or pain).

One of our kitties acts aggressively when she has seen a strange cat outside through the window. It seems for a while she is certain it has come indoors and chases the other cats (this only lasts a minute but may end up in a little fight too). After this she is her normal self. Itīs like she needs to show the other cats their "place" - she considers herself to be the boss.

But never ever has she attacked a human. Only chased the other two cats.

Let us know how it went and if she is ok.

Leena
