what do i do with my male cat

Some of you may remember I posted a thread last year about me having to giving up breeding and having my Persian male castrated, hoping that it might stop him from spraying as I didn’t know what to do with him, due to contracts on him etc...

Well in short its not made a difference and I am at the end of my tether as I thought I was doing what’s best with him but hes just worse.

He went for his op on the 7th of Jan, since then he only wees on the floor and not in his litter???? He will pooh in it but not wee, and his wee still stinks very strong. He came back from the vets with cat flu even though he’s vaccinated, just got rid of that and now he’s starting to loose his fur off his tail, its just dropping off, the skin isn’t flaky and is nice and pink???

He has to live in my conservatory with a cat flap to an outside pen, but the smell of cat pee wafts through the patio doors even thought I clean and disinfect it daily. I hate it when I have people round as I am house proud and find the smell of cat pee embarrassing so have avoided people comming to our home instead.

He’s ok in there now but what about when the warmer weather comes?? what do I do with him then? He could go back in his stud pen but who wants a pet that lives in a pen?

I rang the vets for a long chat and they think that it would be best to have him put to sleep as he would have no quality of life stuck in a pen for the rest of his life and think the fur lose is down to stress.

Is that really the only option for him???? Why on earth do us breeders do this to our stud cats, ok some dont spray, but those that do what kind of future do they have??? This cat was 1 cc away from being a champion and you would never believe me to look at him now! Now hes un-rehomeable and faces a not so good future.......

Sadly I cannot help but I'd certainly do a lot of research and ask other vets.

I would say keep him and get him a companion, just because he lives in a outside run doesnt mean he will have any less of a life!

I agree. I'd smack a vet for suggesting putting a cat to sleep unless it really was the last resort.
And cat flu from the vets? I'd look into your vets more thoroughly..so far they are not sounding great to me.

Re: what do i do with my male cat

It can take up to 6 weeks for their hormones to die down completely, during which time they are still potentially fertile and I would imagine a little confused. At the moment he probably still thinks he is an entire male, and is acting accordingly. The hair loss could be as a result of hormonal changes too.

I would put him back in his stud pen for a month or so, give yourself time to thoroughly clean the conservatory and get rid of the smell - urine off is supposed to be very good for completely removing the odour. Then introduce him back into the house hold gradually, seeing how he behaves. You could also try changing his litter to encourage him to wee in it for something like CatAttract (R&L Pet Products do both the litter and urine off).

I have to say I am shocked that a vet would suggest putting down a completely healthy cat. Even if you don't feel you can cope with him, there are people out there that are willing to take on problem cats and give them the full and long life they deserve. I personally think that at the moment he isn't a problem, he just needs time to adjust and give his hormones time to go.

Re: what do i do with my male cat

There are many strains of cat flu, most resistant to the vaccinethat aside with a companion, toys, climbing towers and human contact theres no reason he cant live out his life with you, maybe as he gets older he will improve his toilet habits,i have a entire male persian and he`s a dirty monkey, choosing to poop on the floor instead of his trayscared:he lives outside with my ragdoll stud quite happily(sometimes too happily

Re: what do i do with my male cat

Thanks for your help, i think that i need to give him more time, im a little stressed at the moment with 4 year old twins one thats disabled, three pet persians and a Dog , and although i love him to bits sometimes you cant see the woods for the trees.

I did'nt want to put him back in his stud pen because of the smell as although i can clean the inside i cant really do the outside as well and will still have his smell, and i dont want to get another cat.
I think i will give it a little longer some have pm me with some good ideas so i will look into them, and fingers crossed things might get better by summer.

Just to say, Dispite what you might think i have to defend my vet, i have been with him for 18 years and he has always been first class with my animals, i was stressed out and upset and he gave me an option or a way out. I dont think bad of him for this as he was only trying to help me out, i will continue to use him as i trust him 100% with my animals and at the end of the day the decision lies with me not my vet.

Re: what do i do with my male cat

If you get to the point where you really feel you cannot keep him why not contact a Persian Rescue - there are several around. I am sure there will be some lovely person willing to offer him a home no matter his habits. Has his breeder any advice to offer?

It is perhaps worth changing his litter type completely and maybe put down an additional tray. Would you consider getting an animal behaviourist around for an assessment to see if they can pinpoint a particular reason as to why he is doing this?

I wish you luck - you obviously have a lot on your plate and I hope you manage to find an appropriate solution.

Re: what do i do with my male cat

I too would advise contacting a rescue or your local persian club to see if he can be re-homed.

There are some people out there that understand the problem of spraying and will cope with it. (This is not in any way a reflection on you).
