They wont use the litter tray...HELP!

We've got 2 kittens (4 months old), we got them at the end of November, they were from the cats protection and so lovely, however....in the last 3 weeks or so they have been driving me mad with not using the litter try. im finding it hard because there are 2 of them i don't know which ones doing what. Well one is pooing by the front door constatly and the other likes to pee on my sofa!!! the first few times i put it down to them being young and getting used to living with us etc...but tonight its just got worse! We have the door open at all times simple because its easier for them to get to their litter tray, and we clean the tray daily, (as i know cats can be fussy), but tonight twinkle just sat in the middle of our sofa and pee'ed right in front of us! What do i do? Ive been picking them up and showing them, then saying its naughty. i really dont know what im doing wrong for them to keep doing this! Can it be stopped?
Please can some one help??? ANYONE?????

Re: They wont use the litter tray...HELP!

First of all whizz them off to vets for a check up to ensure they don't have any UTIs or similar though I suspect this is more behavioural and the fact it has only been in the last three weeks makes it more so. Can you think of anything that may have triggered this? Have you maybe decorated, or had new furniture or had any other pets in the house or moved the tray?

Couple of things to consider.

Is the litter tray big enough? And where is it sited? Ideally is should be in a quiet out of the way place. Is it an open tray? You should perhaps consider getting an additional tray (some cats don't like to wee and poo in the same one!). If you get another tray try a hooded one.

The other thing is that they may not like the litter. If you get a second tray try a different litter. If you are using clumping - then try non-clumping or wood pellets or whatever.

Also consider investing in a Feliway plug in diffuser as if one of them is anxious about something then it may help them.

Good luck.

Re: They wont use the litter tray...HELP!

Thank you for the Advise. unfortunatly i came downstairs this morning to find a present from one of them on the sofa which i wasn't happy about, but hey!
I was thinking of getting another litter tray which was enclosed. seems like one is more fussy that the other. i think i'll go with that idea, thanks again

I would also try a different litter. Some cats prefer a different type of litter to poo from the one they wee in!!

Re: They wont use the litter tray...HELP!

make sure you get rid of the smells too - i beleive non-bio washing powder gets rid of it - someone will be along to tell you if i'm wrong. Once they've been in one place they will go there again if they can still smell it. Maybe confine them to a smaller room when you aren't around with a litter tray in it - we always used the kitchen cos the floor was easy to clean. Put tin foil down where they tend to go (some say it works as cats don't like walking on it - one of mine hated it the other wasn't fussed - ours always went behind the telly on the wires!) Also at 4 months they are still very young and learning still (accidents happen) ours both grew out of accidents quite quickly. Good luck.
